Shirley's Story
There's a wonderful adage that says: "Its not the destination, but the journey that takes you there". Here's a bit of my journey:
I accepted an invitation from my cousin, Eloise, to move to San Diego for college in August after our June graduation. It was a strange place with its own language (LaCienega?), food (tacos and burritos) and culture. I stayed long enough for a Master's in Ed Psych & Counseling and met some fascinating people along the way.
One was Ron Karenga, the founder of Kwanzaa and the US Organization who gave me the name of "Chini", which means down to earth or of the earth.
Long story short, I moved to Los Angeles and worked for Dr. David Satcher, an outstanding educator, doctor and administrator for the Drew School of Medicine who became United States Surgeon General with the Clinton and Bush Administrations. There's a Cleveland connection; he's a graduate of Case Western Reserve School of Medicine! Small world.
I've been a faculty member and professor with the Los Angeles Community Colleges for over 33 years- Good Lord, we're getting there, aren't we? Its never...Expand for more
been boring. I was president of my faculty for ten years, founder of a Foster Parent Program, Counseling Department Chair, Co-Op Ed., Matriculation, Career, and Transfer Center Director. I even found myself as Dean of Counseling at Cerritos College for a brief while.
I decided to marry(first time at 41!)a wonderful guy named Walter Taylor who was an engineer and taught Micro-computer Technology on my campus. We were married for ten years, divorced, best friends and he pasted last year before he turned 60. Its not been easy.
I've been blessed to travel, enjoy great wines, good food, meet great people, experience The Hollywood Bowl with music under the stars, Disney Concert Hall,(designed by Frank Gehry, who designed the School of Business at Case), and have been a volunteer docent at a 100 year old Craftsman Style home built for the heirs of Proctor and Gamble, (another Ohio connection) in Pasadena, Ca.
None of this would have been possible without prayer, Cleveland, my family and friends at Doan, Harry E. Davis and John Hay! I'm looking forward to the second part of my life...
