Shirley's Story

Life I'm doing what I've always wanted to do! I teach school. I know that I was the one who made fun of the teachers at South High. However, I realize that I also learned a lot from them, especially Mr. Faiman. School My biggest crush had to be A.M. who worked in the cafeteria. He sang an Elvis song for the talent show. There was a G.O.who I thought was pretty interesting too. The best teacher was Mr. Faiman!!! He is one of the reasons that I became a teacher. Crazy memory--"working" in the cafeteria with friends and--the food fights :) College I went to college in Omaha before moving to Colorado. I graduated in 1990, form our local "Dodge Street High" UNO with my degrees in Education. Workplace ...Expand for more
I got my feet wet in the education field by becoming a substitute teacher. WOW! What an experience! It helped me find out where I really belong--I now have my own classroom (for the last 12 years) in a low-income school in Colorado Springs. I go home each night feeling tired, but I know that I make a difference! My 3rd graders need me and I need them. We struggle through the lessons because most of the learning comes from the lives they are forced to live. My proudest moment was being selected, by my peers, as the Educator of the Year at my school in 2002/2003. My future goal is to write a book about my experiences as an inner-city school teacher-filled with quotes from the students who made me who I am today.
