Shirley's Story

Okay, 30 questions is alot...I started to skip some after awhile. I don't know....I feel like I've changed so much. I guess I would like to be remembered as a good person. I liked to have fun back then...still do...but work and family come first. I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a not ambitious idea. As it turns out, they were right, but I like it. I still love to read, but I don't have time. My favorite thing to do is to spend time with my kids. The wildest thing I ever did in school...is stay out late and sneak in through the back door. If my car was in the driveway, my parents assumed I was home asleep. I liked to go to clubs and dance from when I was 16. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have Diet Pepsi, friends, and a working computer to be able to deal with the day-to-day. I moved to Belleville when I first got married. Then we relocated to Greenville, because of my husband's job. Next, we moved to Keyesport because we found a cute house there. Then we moved to Highland, because the Carlyle school district was horrible to my son who has autism. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is my dad. My dad, because he just passed away. Everyone else that I really want to see I keep in touch with still. When I do go to Granite, I don't recognize people because I am stupid apparently. I feel like I should recognize people. I've learned from my kids that kids grow up so fast so enjoy every second you can squeeze out of with them. There are many teachers that I would love to see again. Probably any one of them I would get a kick out of seeing. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to autism/stem cell research, then spend the rest on Troy, my son, Mandy, my daughter and me. My best friend would tell you I'm normal, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as I don't know. I share my home with my kids, which I find awesome. If I got to do one do-over, I think I would have...Expand for more
gotten in the computer field. I would say that I wouldn't have married Eric, because after our son regressed into autism, he couldn't cope and eventually left us with bills and such. However, then my kids wouldn't be how they are and I adore them. So, despite all that, I think I would still marry the deadbeat. I think that I would have gotten into a different field, because of salary reasons. (of course I'm writing this during the poor economy times) I love teaching and know based on my data driven instruction that I'm effective, but autism is an uber expensive disorder, so I would have chosen a different career. In 10 years, I hope to be happy and healthy. I'm going to get there by trying to take care of myself. Patty (Star) Odom is one of my oldest friends. We met at Coolidge and I'm not sure why we clicked. I think our personalities and tastes in people were very different in some ways. But when it came down to it, we basically liked people that had good character and didn't like people that didn't have good character. In the end that similarity prevailed. Patty is a teacher, too, so we talk about our field all the time when we find time to go shopping or see each other. She is an amazing mom, which I admire. She has been a huge Shirley supporter throughout the majority of my life, now. I lean on her strength and adore her. I don't know what would surprise everone at my high school reunion. Maybe that I have a son with autism? That usually surprises people. They feel bad for me. Then they try to say something encouraging like "God chose me special for my son." People are always surprised when they find out that he didn't have autism and after his 18 month vaccines he stopped talking and regressed into autism. Just like most of the kids with autism's moms share with me happened to their children. My first job was at Lee's Shortstop, where I got paid $5.00 an hour to work. What I remember most about it is all my friends and people that I know that would come in while I was working.
