Shirley's Story
Life has been interesting for me. I got married at 19 to my high school sweetheart. We are still married. We have two sons and two grandchildren. We have worked hard, but we are living the American dream - at least we are some days.
We own multiple businesses, none of them alike. All of them reasonably successful. I have worked in sales, finance, public service, accounting and ALL the businesses.
We have a gorgeous small ranch (emphasis on the small) on which we raise a few black angus cows, some peacocks, chickens, turkeys, donkeys, a dog and a cat.
Our sons live on either side of us and work with us in one of the businesses.
There has been heartache along the way. One of our sons has enormous medical problems that are a challenge for him and us. He is very upbeat in spite of all he has endured. God has been merciful and we are grateful for what we have been given. He is a beautiful gift, as is his brother and my two precious grandchildren.
I write poetry and have had some of it published. It is a joy to me that others read and seem to like what I have written. I posted a few of them on my bulletin board and you are welcome to read them if you like.
My husband delights in old cars and trucks, so we have some interesting vehicles ie, a '59 and a '62 Willys Jeep truck and a Mighty Mite, as well as a '67 Corvette. Also a couple of 60's scooters.
One of the businesses that we have owned involved restoring old Corvettes. Most of them were wrecked and I stripped the paint off with a box knife razor because the paint solvents available at that t...Expand for more
ime ate into the fiberglass.
What a chore to prep them for painting and to detail them afterward, along with hunting parts for them nationwide! The necessity of doing that was a valuable lesson learned when I began doing quotes for jobs for international companies with another business we opened some years later.
We own a Beechcraft Sierra, which we enjoy flying. My husband has an IFR rating on his pilots license.
We also have a Huey helicopter that saw service during the Vietnam era. It is mounted as you see the old jets and other aircraft at various state facilities, with one small difference. The Huey is a weather vane and the slightest breeze will put the nose into the wind. The mechanism for this is my husband's design.
Like many of our generation, he is a Vietnam Veteran, which has colored our lives in many different colors, some happy, sunny shades and some dark, stormy shades, but all things need both sunshine and water to grow and we have grown together over the years of our lives.
We enjoy having friends and family come for cookouts. I have a big family and our place is ideal for getting together.
I occasionally see or talk to the people who attended school with us and I stay in touch via e-mail with some of them.
My life is probably pretty typical of most people. I go to work each day, travel when I get the opportunity, take care of my family and find joy in each and everything that I can, because life is short no matter how long it is.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope you, too have had (and are having) an amazing life.
