Simon J.'s Story

Life - November 28, 2008 I returned to WorkOne Evansville with the Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development as a DVOP - Veterans Employment Specialist. As you can see I'm still here in Southern Indiana living in Evansville. Its a great city to raise a family in. I finally got to a position as a Parole Officer for the Indiana Department of Correction in the Evansville Parole Office. I served from September 26, 2005 until September 2007 (2 years). I really enjoying my job. Trying to motivate ex-offenders to go straight and make the most of life. Some will, some won't! I tried to help the ones I could and revoke and sent the ones I could not back to prison when I caught them violating parole. But I left because of the time involved and being gone and missing family activities and my kids activities. worked 65 to 75+ hours per week covering Posey County, Vanderburgh County, Warrick County and Spencer County including transporting parole violators back to prison - men Women and kids. Boy did I burn up the mileage each month. My return someday when my little eagles have flown the nest. It sure is a job that will keep you very busy! I am also a member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) as Senior Vice Commander, the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) as Senior Vice Commander, American Legion as Senior Vice Commander and the Vanderburgh County Veterans Council as Junior Vice Commander. I also serve as a member of the Homeless Veterans Committee on the Cities Homelessness Initiative and on the Discharge Planning Committee and Coalition. I have really enjoyed working with and for Veterans and Veteran Ex-Offenders here in Southern Indiana. I hope to see a place for homeless Vets to stay within the next year. Well I have past the the Mid-way mark in life - 50 Years, Now 54 years old. I was a Veterans Employment Specialist with the Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development at WorkOne Evansville in Evansville, Indiana. I would have had 7 years in come November 2005. But left September 26, 2005. I really loved my job assisting veterans in finding employment and assisting them with getting past barriers. I earned an Individual Incentive Award this summer which I am real proud of for a "Bike to Work Program" we started to help homeless vets get transportation to look for work and then to get back and forth to...Expand for more
work once employed. I have been married to my 2nd wife Brenda for 20 Years. We have raised my 2 kids (Abigail & Brian) from my first marriage. And are raising our 5 kids (Simon III 20, Brande 18, Jesse & Jessica 17, & Sarah 15). I have 4 Grandkids - Cody11, Paige 9 & Faith 7 from my daughter Abigail, and Jordan from my son Brian. We helped raising Faith while my son-in-law (Carroll) was overseas in Afghanistan in the military. He is now back in Iraq again serving his country. Before my present job I spent approx. 16 years in security. I also spent 4 years in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman with most of my time aboard the USS Long Beach CGN-9 a Guided Nuclear Cruiser. I made 2 West-Pac's going to Hawaii several times, Guam, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines (a lot), New Zealand, Australia, and the Seashell Islands off the coast of Africa. I also sat off the coast of Vietnam during the Vietnam conflict. I have spent a wild and wonderful life while I was single and overseas. And have settled down to raising my family and spending time with my kids and grandkids. I love to take them to the Evansville Otters baseball games. And had the pleasure of taking my parents, kids, and grandkids all to the same game for a great family time. Yea! Go Otters.. Some of my greatest times in High School were playing on the Football Team - Rangers. And being on the Track Team. I really enjoyed it. Its what made school fun. College: I graduated from the University of Evansville with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. I also made the Dean's List one semester in the summer of 1988 which for someone who hated school in my younger days was real surprising. I've gone to several colleges. I started in San Diego, California at San Diego City College 1979/1980 and Then Southwestern College 1979. I then went to the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana 1986 to 1989. Where I got my Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. I really enjoyed my time in school and all the people that I met. I am now looking forward to returning to school for a Masters Degree in Business or Psychology. I am waiting for my 3 youngest kids to finish their last 3 years of High School. Good Luck to all of you out there still pressing forward in the Military. Thank You for Your Service! Have a Good Day! Simon J. Leon Jr.
