Sister Kathleen's Story

For some 50 plus years I have had a remarkable life, as a Franciscan Sister (Catholic Nun) and have had the joy of living and serving Gods people. Twenty three of those years were spent in the Rain Forest in Bolivia, the last 8 years in the Amazon of Bolivia. Were the joy of teaching adults to read, write and get their elementary, junior high and high school education. Many were teachers who were teaching in three grades schools. While they themselves had only a third grade education. Now that program is continuing on being funded by the Bolivian Government. We lived (two of us a Sister Nurse and my self) for 7 of the last 8 years in a building that had been built to store Brazil nuts, instead two Franciscan nuts lived there. No running water, or electricity. It was a real challenge and a great Joy. Now due to health I am not able to return although my heart is there. The years not in Bolivia I taught mostly first and second grades together in very small black schools as integration was still not a part of life here in our southern states. Other years in Miami at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church I was a parish minister visiting homes, running the youth program and other...Expand for more
church related things. At present my home is in Ruskin, Fl. I am living alone but have two Cairn Terriers one is 1 7 years old and the other is 3. I do a lot of gardening, all flowers, and have been having fun with genealogy and learning about our family.A friend who lived in the same apartment building that I do talked me into starting a community garden which we did together for a few months then her husband died she moved and I am still running the community garden. We have 16 plots 2 of which are small 4X4's the rest are 4X8's two of the 4X8 and the two 4X4's are raised high enough to allow handicapped persons in wheelchairs or scooters are able to garden from their chairs or scooters. I am pleased to say that two people who know about our gardens are copying our plans. One had built 4 or 5 gardens raised as those we have for the handicapped and another person just called to ask if I would visit her and teach her how to start a vegetable garden where she lives. I will be glad to teach her what I know and if she starts to grow vegetables in the garden by her apartment perhaps others who live in that complex will also try their hand at growing their own vegetables.
