More about Skip:"I enjoy the adventure sports, like scuba diving, cave exploring, rock climbing, high country hiking, sky diving (only once, but I plan to go again when I hit 100 years old), and any adrenaline addict activity I can manage--particularly street outreach, which I consider to the be ultimate "adventure sport" of the Christian life. Fishing for fish and people is a long time favorite--and I've come to trace the organic connection between the two activities. Over the past dozen years my primary life task has been to help people do what they thought was impossible before they met me. In hundreds of cases, this has been to stand in the pulpit before a live public audience and preach their first ever sermon. As public speaking of any kind is more fearful for the average American than death itself, that means I have repeatedly led groups of up to 220 people ...Expand for more
at a time through an activity that for most of them is more terrifying than going into live combat. I've specialized in this particular form of human development, working with people from ages 7 through 83, so far--though mostly 5th through 12th graders to date. I am a writer, a poet, a songwriter, and a storyteller. I have the good fortune of being deeply in love with the woman I married 29 years ago, still on heart-to-heart speaking terms with our two adult sons who live with us, and actually believe the teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, of which I am an ordained minister. Would that every person and pastor could be so fortunate as me in these matters. I would do what I do for a living even if I weren't paid for it. I am both a pastor and a teacher. But I always have one foot firmly planted outside of whatever specific institution I am working in, out in the larger community. My life and work have taken me to 44 states in America, as well as Canada and Mexico to date, and I've lived in 12 states. I consider myself a sort of "perpetual tourist", and have developed a keen interest in exploring new cultures, so the many places we've lived and worked allows me to indulge this particular interest regularly. I'm a fourth generation vegetarian, and have both the genes and lifestyle that could well take me beyond the century mark--short of accident, or martyrdom. I am a functional mystic, in the Biblical Theism tradition. I've been a pastor or Christian high school chaplain since I graduated from college in 1981.".
