Skip Simpson:

CLASS OF 1972
Charlotte, NC

Skip's Story

- July 72 - Nov 80: USMC including three years overseas in Cambodia, Lebanon, and Kenya with visits to Egypt, Thailand, India, and Greece. I had some great times. Went water skiing on the Mekong River, walked all over the city of Beirut, toured some ancient ruins in Greece, climbed a mountain in Kenya (14,500 ft), visited the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the Bridge of the River Kwai inThailand, ate some great food, and so on an so on. - Spent all of 1981 back in Charlotte at UNCC studying engineering. Didn't like it. Got out. Should have just changed my major. Went to work instead. Joined Calvary Church. Got married (to Mary Ann) in March 1983. Went back into the marines for 4 years (California and then Missouri). Got out in 88 still married with a 4-year old daughter (Shannon). I spent the last two years on recruiting duty in Missouri. Hated recruiting. It wasn't good for my family. - Spent 10 years in Greenville, SC. Son (Tyler) born in 1989. My family joined the First Church of the Nazarene in Greenville. - Moved to Glen Allen, VA (just north of Richmond) in 98 in a job move. I do tech support for a company. It took a long time to find a good church home. I'm a member of West End Baptist Church now. It was hard to find a church where they feed you "meat" so to speak. - My daughter Shannon is married to her HS sweetheart ...Expand for more
and living in the Kansas City, KS area. She's expecting our first grandchild (Aliza Grace) this June. She's a NICU nurse. I was 30 when she was born and she will be thirty when her daughter is born. My son is also married to his HS sweetheart. He spent 4 years in the marines doing a tour in Iraq and another in Afghanistan. Unlike me, my daughter has always been very socially involved in HS, college, and even now. - I like to read and usually am juggling 3 or 4 books at once on my Nook. My knees aren't what they once were so no more running. I bike instead. This year, I decided to dabble in art (a first for me) and have spent time doing watercolor pencil paintings. Wish I had taken art in Junior High and HS but I wasn't interested in it then. - Any regrets? Well, I wish I had done better academically in Junior HS and HS. Wish I had known more people in HS; but I was pretty much the opposite of my daughter when it came to social stuff. If I was as "chatty" then as I am now maybe I would have known more people. My kids tell me that I'll just talk to anyone at the oddest times now. - I have a "different" sense of humor. In some ways, the character "Chandler" from the Friends TV show and I have a similar sense of humor. It's not uncommon for me to be the only person laughing in the movie theater. There aren't many of us out there.
