Solveig's Story

I worked for St. Mary's Hospital Pharmacy from the middle of my senior year in high school until 1984, when I quit to get married in Sept. 1984. I moved to our farm in rural Austin, MN. We had a wonderful two week honeymoon in Hawaii, but when we got back from the honeymoon, by husband changed, some of it probably due to the fact that harvest was in full swing when we got back, but he expected me to know everything about farming, and I was a city girl. I was thrown into things that I knew nothing about, but I learned fast. I learned to drive tractors, run for parts, and I used my pharmacy skills in giving baby pig shots! We had our first child, Michael in June, 1985, 6 weeks early. Michael contracted Beta-Strep during the birth process, and at 3 1/2 weeks, came down with Meningitis and passed away 2 days later. In November 1986, I had a set of triplets, 11 1/2 weeks early. Brian was 3 pounds, Christine, 2 pounds 7 ounces, and David, 2 pounds, 14 ounces. At 12 hours old, Brian collapsed a lung and they were successful at placing a chest tube. David collapsed both lungs and they had to place 4 chest tubes, and at 17 hours, he passed away. (Two of the chest tubes actually went through his lungs.) It must be almost impossible to get those chest tubes...Expand for more
in such a tiny area! Brian did pretty well and developed well until 2nd grade when he developed Tourettes Syndrome, which he outgrew, but then developed Aspberger's Disease and ADD. He needed help with homework every day and he had anger outbursts quite often. Christine had a major brain bleed and had to have several brain surgeries, and eventually a shunt placed. She also had Meningitis a couple of times. She continues to do pretty well, even though she has to work extra hard at learning things. In 1989, we had our last son, Ross, born full term. He is currently living and working with his Dad as a farmer, even though he has a degree in Machine Tooling. He never found a job locally in that area. Unfortunately, my marriage was abusive, mostly verbal, but physical once in a while. I had to stay to take care of the children's needs, and I didn't want the kids to hate their Dad. By the time we did divorce, they hated me. He must have told them lies. I am sure of it. Now Brian has seen his Dad for what his really is and doesn't have much to do with him. I am living in my own house in town in Austin right now, but I don't care for Minnesota winters, so I am looking for my one true love and I want to move somewhere south, but not to the southwest.
