Sonia's Story
Life
After studying physics at UCLA, I began working for a company that designs and builds rocket engines for the Space Shuttle, where I have remained since. Having never married, my name is unchanged. Though I've had no children, I provided a home to a young person who is now a Registered Nurse and is in graduate school. Other than brief job stints (Los Alamos, etc.), I've happily remained in the Glendale-Montrose-Pasadena area, which is where church, friends, and family are.
School
Classes that particularly delighted me were:
Algebra-Trigonometry with Mr. Jordan
Physics (of course!) with Mr. Lochead
Chemistry with Miss Marshall
English with Mr. Burghdorf
German with Mr. Trotter
Acappella with Mr. Delange
Dance with Miss Ness
College
1986 - BS in Physics from UCLA
1988 - MS in Physics from UCLA
A wonderful university! The Dept. of Physics is close-knit, and highly ...Expand for more
acclaimed. I enjoyed my studies there very much.
Workplace
Thoughout college, in addition to being a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant at UCLA, I was fortunate to have various interesting jobs building interesting experiments and machinery (thermoacoustic, particle physics, dynamic phased shifters, high voltage, etc.) at Los Alamos Laboratory, LaJet Energy Company, and others. Throughout high school and a couple of years after, I worked on SUNFIRE, a large thermo-mechanical electric power station consisting of a parabolic concentrator, boilers, and generator, and of which construction provided experience in arc-welding, machining, and optics. At present, I work on electrical components on the Space Shuttle Main Engine, which runs on hydrogen and oxygen. In this capacity, I analyze data from flights, assist with designs and overhauls, and investigate anomalies.
