Sonja's Story
After finishing my high school education in Michigan, I moved to California for a year before coming back to Illinois and settling down in Naperville/Aurora. I've raised two wonderful children; my son an artist and my daughter who works for Amazon, managing a department in Michigan. I was married 24 years before divorcing while in treatment for Stage IV Synovial Sarcoma. I was diagnosed 7/23/14 and continue to kick cancer ass. After tons of chemo and several surgeries (one of which removed my entire left lung), I was able to be NED (no evidence of disease). I've since had two recurrences, been NED twice more, and am currently on my 3rd recurrence. Radiation is the plan this time and we're confident I'll b...Expand for more

After living a happy, typical suburban life, cancer has been a wake up call and reminds me to live each day/month/year with purpose and joy. I've since traveled both abroad and state side, bucket listing things like the eclipse, whale watching, etc. I'm dating a wonderful man and have the most wonderful friends who have seen me through the worst and celebrated the best. I am truly blessed!
I love to cook, posting my dishes on Instagram. I mentor other cancer patients through Immerman Angels and various support groups online. I work out a few days a week just to stay strong and be ready for the next thing cancer throws my way. Somehow I manage to fill my days and completely love my life!
