Kim's Story
It has been a crazy 20 years for me. I graduated from UNC in 1993 with a degree in Communications & Journalism and went on to pursue a career in sports broadcasting. I also played tennis for UNC for 4 years receving All-America honors my senior year and being ranked as high as 3rd in the nation. I was fortunate enough to land my 1st job not long after graduating. I moved to Abilene, Texas for a sports reporter/anchor gig. I worked there for 1 year and 4 months before moving up and on to a bigger market... unfortunately it was further from home. I was a weekend anchor and sports reporter in Huntsville, Alabama for one year. While I was there I learned a great deal about NASCAR and the insaneness of SEC football. That job had its ups and downs... the down being let out of my contract after 1 year (long story). I bounced back and landed an even better job in Jacksonville, Florida as a sports reporter at the #1 station in town.
I spent 6 years there, 3 of those years I covered practically every type of sporting event out there. It was an incredible job for someone who is young and single. However I realized that for the rest of my sports broadcasting life I would most likely be working nights, holidays and weekends. As a single person that was no problem, but I had met the man who would become my husband, and working a job where I never saw him wasn't ideal. Plus I was starting to miss important family events due to the "book" or "sweeps" as it is known in TV land. When I planned my wedding around football season... i knew the stations priorities and my ...Expand for more
priorities were no longer the same.
So I quit. I found a great job that allowed me to maintain the creative aspect of television that I enjoyed which was directing, producing and editing.
It also gave me my life back.
I don't regret the 7 years I worked in "broadcast" tv as it allowed me to travel, interview hundreds of athletes on all levels, experience the rush of a live shot post Gator game, playing on amazing golf courses for media days (i do miss that part of it).
I realized one day I didn't want to have to tell my children that I couldn't attend their sporting event because I had to cover another game where those involved weren't ones I loved.
So, my husband and I moved back home to Colorado and started our family. We have 2 children, Cooper and Raliegh.
We moved back to Arvada and we love it. I work full time and in the spring I coach the Ralston Valley Girls' Tennis team.
It's great as we have found that so many people have "come home" while others never left. I guess our parents knew how great Arvada was/is... even way back when. Life hasn't been all rosy as I am sure some of you may know or heard... and if you have any questions about Kevin, feel free to ask me about it. I still love my brother very much and we are probably closer now than we ever were. I know sometimes some people don't know what to say... and I understand that. We've been dealing with this for years now and while it doesn't get any easier to live with, it does get somewhat easier to talk about.
Hope to see everyone at the 20th reunion at one or all the events.
