Stacy's Story

Life After high school, I went to University of Richmond, where I had an English major /Theatre minor, with a concentration in Education. During my student teaching, I developed a strong dislike for the SOLs, and decided that teaching in public school settings was not for me. I spent a number of years after college finding ways to use teaching skills in a non-traditional manner, from training adults for work to teaching programs in museums to leading an after school program to leading activity programs with adults in assisted living facilities. I am currently a part-time preschool music teacher at a Christian preschool in Richmond, Virgina. I was married in 1994. My husband is originally from Salem, and we met during the summer of 1988 at a Governor's school program. (We didn't start dating, though, until 1991.) We lived in Cloverdale for a year, and learned that coming by good jobs in the Valley wasn't going to happen. We relocated to Charlottesville for a year for my husband to finish graduate school, and then moved to Richmond, VA. My daughter Emily was born in 2000, and since then I have primarily held the job of "Mom," though I started my job at the preschool in 2004. I work a few hours a week (and do my planning at home), which allows plenty of time for running the house and volunteering at school. Still, I have found that there is never as much time in a day as I would like. I am currently trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up, since, as a friend pointed out, my child will be out of the house in about 11 years, so I better have a plan. While I will continue to work part-time, it seems to be a very good idea to remain accessible and available during the middle schoo...Expand for more
l and high school years. (I know some people who were not s-a-h parents until that stage of life, and found it wise to take the time to stay in strong relationship with their kids during those difficult years.) Still, at 36 I am in the position of trying to figure out what I most want to do to make a positive impact on the world with the rest of my life. I am almost certain this will be something in the non-profit sector and/or something with a creative component. Meanwhile, for those that know my family, my mom is still living in the same house in Blue Ridge where I grew up and still working at Orvis. My dad passed away in April 2004, suddently and unexpectedly, with no need for doctors of hospitals as a result (exactly the way he would have wanted it). If you drive through Rocky Mount and notice a red airplane being used as a sign - that was my dad's, and is formerly the location of Skyridge Motors. (I think some people own it who sell sheds or something now.) And, since you're still reading, just a couple of notes on my daughter. She is in second grade (as of this writing in fall 2007). (And yes, she is in public school, and yes I still hate the SOLs.) She is bright and funny and moody. She is very intersted in theatre, and loves to sing. (She has taken classes with Christian Youth Theatre, and she will be old enough to audition for mainstage shows next year.) She is a Brownie. She really likes sports, and after several seasons of soccer and tball, she decided to play flag football this fall, which was tons of fun. She will be playing basketball for the first time in January 08. She is my joy and my inspiration, and perhaps that in a nutshell can sum up what I am all about.
