Stacy's Story
Life
History
After high school I took a couple of years off and worked at the plastic plant downtown where I met the guy I thought I would marry -- Rodney. Didn't happen and to tell the truth, I don't really remember why.
After that, I saw life was going nowhere, so I joined the Air Force. We had a couple-days long party and off I went. Rumor has it people thought I was dead or in jail. Even at my party, most people didn't believe I was joining the Air Force. Turns out, it was the best thing I ever did.
My Job
I spent 21 years in the Air Force. My first 10 years as a weather observer/forecaster, the last 11 in public affairs. That meant everything from writing stories, taking pictures and setting up events to base tours and building new Air Force Web sites.
I've been retired since 2011. I did a short stint as an emergency dispatch for the Highway Patrol and then a few years as an executive assistant with the DOT. The new governor required a move on my part so I returned to the Highway Patrol as an admin. Again, the best thing ever....Expand for more
I love, love, love my job.
Moving
I've moved more than a dozen times over my career not counting deployments. My boy and I settled in North Carolina (the other NC) after retirement and we both love it here.
My Kid
My son is now 25 and getting married in November. He is a corrections officer at a state maximum security prison but his goal is to become straight law enforcement in the future.
Being in the Air Force has given me unique opportunities. I've met several presidents, seen volcanoes from above and lived through earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons and tornadoes. I've never been to the Arctic or Antarctic, but I've seen many other amazing places. I've lived in Panama, been to the tip of South America, as far east as Guam, many of the States, throughout the Middle East and a half dozen European countries.
All of that said, there are still many things I'd like to do in life. As I near 50, I find myself wanting to do and see more and more. Now that my boy is all grown up, I'm finally trying to do things just for the fun of it.
