Stan's Story

Life STAN GIBELL first called Philadelphia home in 1978 when he moved there from his native New York City. After pursuing an acting career whose highlight was an appearance in an off-Broadway production of A Thurber Carnival, he joined the New York City Better Business Bureau in 1971. His successful eleven-year career in the BBB system helped him attain the position of Vice President of Operations for the Philadelphia Bureau. His achievements for the BBB include establishing and managing the BBB/Readers Digest Internship Program, being among the first to initiate Consumer-Business Arbitration Tribunals, actively campaigning against consumer fraud, and teaching consumer education through his writing and public appearances. In 1981, Philadelphia Mayor William J. Green appointed Mr. Gibell to the Mayors Consumer Advisory Panel. His peers selected him as chairperson, a position he held for three years. During his BBB years, Stan was often a guest on consumer-oriented radio programs. In 1979, WCAU-AM, then the CBS Philadelphia affiliate, asked him to substitute for the host of the daily, three-hour consumer program. After inviting him back numerous times, station management offered him the chance to host his own talk-radio show. During a ten-year radio career, his format expanded to cover news, entertainment, self-help issues, and an interactive programming style that made listeners want to call to talk to him. Stan also distinguished himself as a skilled interviewer and conducted hour-long conversations with Phil Donahue, Tony Bennett, Debbie Reynolds, presidential candidate John Anderson, Sid Caesar, and many others.
