Stan's Story

STORIES…all of us, everybody, has a story…or many stories to tell. My adult chapters begin shortly after graduation day…1966; Joining the U.S. Air Force, almost immediately, one could have found me in Mississippi, Southern California, Arizona, Las Vegas, Germany and yes, also could have found me in Southeast Asia. 14+ years in the Air Force was eventful, and was fun. It set the stage for the rest of my career/s. Marriage lassoed me in the early, early 80’s and shortly after we found ourselves with an aerospace company working a Air Force project just outside Cambridge, U.K. We would be there for eight years…all three children were born in England, the eldest daughter was born in an 18th Century Workhouse, the kind described in OLIVER TWIST. The twins, a boy and girl, were born in a regular old hospital… interesting thing there though, they were supposed to be born on July 23rd, but got delayed because 23rd was day prince Andrew and Fergie were to be wed! Hmmm? So they were born on the 24th. While living in England, I was able to participate with an Anglo-American Chorus. We sand in some of the oldeest churches and amphitheaters in the country. Spring and summer shows were fun...the ones in the dead of Winter wer not so much fun. PAINFUL is more the proper feeling! Again we were there for 8 years. Coming back to the States in early 1990, we found ourselves in Colorado Springs, CO. If you recall, later that year an event began over the Persian Gulf which demanded attention from most of the world. I got to take that trip without the family. January –early May of ‘90’ I found myself in a tent with 20 other grown men…, yep, all with stories. Returning to Colorado in early May, I found my marriage had really gone south. I realize it didn’t help that I was gone so much up to that point, but that is a different story. As it happens, my company sent me back to the Persian Gulf area, this time to a small island nation called Bahrain. The first trip to Bahrain was to last about 6 months. And upon returning to Colorado…well, as the story goes, the marriage was really shot. The position in Colorado was gone too. My company moved me to North Carolina, spousal unit and little ones stayed in Colorado. Much of ‘92’ was spent going back and forth from N.C. to CO. to do ‘D’ thing. Most of ‘93’ was spent going back and forth from N.C. to the Middle East with a side trip to Somalia in September of 93. That was a very bad trip. Many of you probably vaguely remember events of early October, 1993. I was there, with those guys…another war…another story. Upon returning to the States, news reached me that an office with the Department of navy was trying to rea...Expand for more
ch me. Seems, the program I had been working with the aerospace company had intrigued the navy folks and they wanted to have it installed on some of their ships. But they had no history/knowledge of the equipment. So, I left the aerospace company and North Carolina in January of 1994. It just happened to be over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. I was unemployed for 3 days, the period of unemployment of working life. After a month or so of doing administrative things, by mid-February I was back in Bahrain setting up shop for what would be 14 years of challenges. My equipment would eventually be installed on 8 different classes of navy ships. I got to travel on all of them, 30 or so trips a year I would be able to go out to the ships and stay on them for a few days; some were good trips, some were devastating to the human body and soul. July 1994, Bahrain, best chapter of the story is I met Marlene. Marlene is Filipina and was working in Bahrain. We were wed in April of 1996 (just so happened to be my Mom’s BD) We don’t use the word ‘smitten’ very much any more. I was SMITTEN!!! My kids love her and so do I. She is my hero. The day after Valentine’s day, 2004 I woke up not feeling well. Before the day was over, I would be in a specialty care hospital having had a M.I. Actually had been having it for 5 days. Much damage resulted from not having it addressed sooner. As it turns out, I had to be in an intensive care unit for almost a month before needed operations could be performed. But, I did, and they were and we are all happy now. Marlene had to learn really fast how things worked with the U.S. insurance companies, U.S. government, areas she really hadn’t had to directly work with…up to that point. But she did and she did great. Marlene is my … hero. Mid 2005 found me back in Iraq. Was there for 5-ish months this trip. Got to stay in my own conex type cabin this trip. We had learned a lot between the 1990 trip and this one. HA!!! Returned to Bahrain in July 2005 and found myself being sent to Dubai, U.A.E. to work with a company who built some of my stuff. Takes me to 2006. 2006 was a year of mostly sitting on the island waiting for a phone call saying needed to pack up and get back to the States. That phone call happened in September and was back in States by mid-October. We have been in Indiana, just outside Bloomington ever since. Retirement is coming up very soon. I have noticed, through some of your stories, that retirement has already happened. Good for you. So, what will happen now…travel, and more…stories! Will try to get some pictures posted that will cover some of what I have shared over past few hundred words. Hope you will enjoy as much as I.
