Stan's Story

In March of 1961, right after my 18th birthday and one semester at CCC I avoided the mandatory draft by auditioning with the 573rd Air Force Band at Hamilton AFB. Following 9 weeks basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, I was assigned to Hamilton. This was the Air Defense Command Band of the West. We traveled all over the western U.S., Colorado Springs, hot spots in Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and any place that would have us. In 1963 I was sent to Panama where we represented the Caribbean Air Command. Again, a lot of frequent air miles all over Central and South America. Applying for and getting an early out in Dec. 1964. I re-entered CCC to study computer programming. I lasted a year, having married childhood and later sweetheart, Dianna Hatzell and taking an entry level position with Atlas Foundry working nights during school terms. Things didn't go as well as I expected there, so I moved to Glendale, CA in Dec., '66 to work in accounts receivable and data processing for frozen food distributor. Three and a half years later I learned that I was eligible for GI education benefits. I had been a part-time youth minister at the First Baptist Church in Glendale and was often asked why I didn't do it full-time. I decided to pursue a teaching credential. That meant another move to Richmond and re-entry into CCC as a Humanities (history) major. Attending around the calendar and tansfering to Cal State Hayward I finally got the credential for elementary teaching. I only applied at three school districts--San Pablo, Mount Diablo and Fairfield. The one and only call I got was from Fairfield. I gladly accepted. That meant the purchase of our second house, a new one that was ready for us to move into just before school started in 1973 where I taught 4th-6th grades. During the last session of prep-work a CCC, our first of three sons, Scott, was born. He eventually quartbacked De Anza's football team to the championship playing in the Raiders' stadium. Early into the first year of teaching our second son, Christopher Robin, was born and the two years later Andrew came along. Sadly to say the marriage ended in 1978. I married a Texas "belle" and spent 2 more years in Fairfield. I left the public school to be the Learning Center Supervisor at our Christian school. A drastic wage cut made survival difficult. I had RUHS friends in Medford, Oregon who suggested I apply at Grace Christian. I did and thought it looked like a done deal. But...after selling almost all our STUFF and hauling two loads to family property at Gold Hill, OR, I found out that it was decided to go with two part-time teachers. I was, however, hired to substitute. And, as I had a bus driver's license for driving church buses, I got on as a trip driver for Central Point Schools and substitute taught for Eagle Point, Central Point and Rogue River Schools. A couple of years of that and I decided I needed medical insurance, so took a regular bus route in Central Point. the next year I was offered the Sardine Creek Road route in Gold Hill, where I lived and kept the bus on my families' 40 acres just a mile from Gold Hill. I loved it. But, met a woman from Grants Pass (20 miles north) whom I married in '84. The early morning and late evening drive back and forth (especially during the winter months) forced me to find work in Grants Pass. I worked for Head Start one year, then got hired by SPARC Enterprises as a Skills Trainer for developmentally disabled adults. 20 years later I retired after a wonderful experience. Then,...Expand for more
the real fun began. I volunteer at the YMCA playing table games with kids and helping with homework. Dogs for the Deaf gets me 4 hours a week helping in the office and spending time with dogs in training. With the senior choir "The Pacemakers" I sing at senior adult living facilities. The Rogue Community College band and orchestra get more of my time. I really enjoy playing bassoon with both, sometimes doubling on bass clarinet. After having the left hip replaced in '08, and being divorced, I moved back to Gold Hill to assist my older brother care for our 95 year old mother. Losing her this January, it's just the two of us. I fondly think of us as "The Secondhand Lions" revisited. Well, that just about ties up most of the loose ends. Just gotta say, "I''ve had a blast this past month making contact with many of you from the class of '60, and plan to keep close contact from now on. Since last writing I had left hip recalled (DePuy) in April 2012 and right hip done in August. Doing great. With a spinal, I was able to hear everything going on in the room. Only spent one night. Three weeks later, bought a Mazda, Miata to celebrate the ability for the first time in years to get into and out of something like that. Traded my truck for luxury car so I wouldn't have to haul or do lawn work for other folks...someone can do it for me now. Until next time. Take care, stay well and happy. Hope to hear from many, Stan "gameboy" Olds This chapter is a little out of order, but couldn't figure out how to cut and paste on friend's comlputer t's July 22, 2010 and I'm moving back to Grants Pass Oregon. I'm involved in so many activities there and have new employment opportunities it makes sense to cut down the 40 mile round trip many days a week. I've also applied for campground host positions at some of the many fish hatcheries and one lighthouse on the coast. This never materialized. Bought a small travel trailer that just sits. Trying to sell it...no luck so far. Attended our 50th reunion and had a great time. Will be performing at the RUSD all school reunion Sept. 28th. Make it if you can and "Let me entertain you". BIG pause. Married delightful Darlene in Oct. 2014. House in Merlin, OR sold in Dec...moved Jan. 2 (with lots of family help) to small cottage (3 room) next to granddaughter and family. Then in May, 2016 bought a larger place in senior community. More room and projects to keep us busy. On top of that I am involved a new Christian musical "The Prodigals". Haven't done anything like this since our senior play. Crew is really considerate of my "old age". A year has passed with a lot of exhaustion from musical rehearsals and performances. Then came 3 months of pneumonia, copd and sleep apnea diagnosis. Finally, now in March am doing much better. Trips to Branson for a week, then to Boisie for a great granddaughter’s graduation. Thinking about an Amtrak trip from Klamath Falls to the Bay Area and maybe visit old stomping grounds we missed last year when went to Napa to ride The Wine Train through the valley. Also attended Oktoberfest in Mt Angel last year and plan to go again this year, especially to see one of Mollie B’s polka groups. Back again. Weeklong visit to Branson MO for wonderful country music, a great granddaughter’s graduation and an appearance with dog, Baron in the Boatnik Parade has started our summer off with a bang. Now looking forward to a family get together in Round Mountain, NV, an Amtrak ride to visit the old stomping grounds and a repeat Oktoberfest at Mt Angel m, OR.

Had a great afternoon and evening at "Back to the 50's" in Grants Pass. Pie and ice cream with wonderful 50's music. Then a stroll among bunches of classic/antique cars and trucks. Really disappointed with the non-50's and
