Stan's Story

August 22, 2015: Not much new to add. Still retired and still 18 years old, well, I still act it anyway. Just rejoined Classmates for whatever. In 2009, often beginning with Classmates, I reconnected with mucho old friends and classmates and have been communicating with many of them via email, my email addy is still listed in the text below. One childhood friend, Alan Briggs, and I now live close to each other and have played a lot of golf and chess. Long story about how he ended up in Carrboro but it is great having him near and sharing old memories. Rather than redo everything I'll just add a note: Fran passed away on January 19, 2010. Life Keep vacillating about paying for a membership here. Finally bit the bullet. My life bio would require much more than 4,000 characters, ergo I'll pass. Currently am retired following a wonderful opportunity from my previous employer to take part in a headcount cutback. Decided I was too old to attempt another run at job hunting. Have 2 granddaughters, 5 and 7, one, Randi's and the other Keith's. Still living in Raleigh. We now have two buildings on the property; one with 2 apts, Keith and his daughter live in one and I live in the other. The main house is now occupied by Randi and her family (Jon is her husbands name). They did extensive renovations on the 35 or so year old house, added a pool, took down over 125 trees (Argh!). Jon is an architect with his own firm and designed the entire complex. For those who don't know, Fran has been in a...Expand for more
nursing home for 10 years now. She is suffering from Alzheimer's. She has not talked for 12 years or so and has been nonambulatory for 5+ years. She is still seemingly alert but that's based on eye movements and an occasional smile or laugh. I go every night, feed her dinner and spend the evening with her. The nursing home she has been in for the past 8 years is reasonably good but I forever have to stay vigilant to make sure they care for her correctly. This has the effect of keeping me off the nominations for Caregiver of the Year. LOL. Still ambivalent about being retired but it is great not having to rise early, shower, dress and get to work. Now I get up, fix coffee, watch Morning Joe and get on the computer until it's time to go to the nursing home. Not exactly an exhilarating lifestyle but damn folks, I'm old. For those of you who can read this, should you so desire, I can be reached at 919-847-4711 or at silkyz at bellsouth dot net. Used my old high school nickname, courtesy of Coach Eby, but had to add the "z" because someone had the gall to use "silky" first. Am forever nostalgic of our high school days. Some of my fondest life memories were from that time. Depending on what happens with Fran, or when, it is highly unlikely I will ever see any of you again. I wish all of you the very best life can offer, notwithstanding arthritis, worsening eyesight, loss of hearing, obesity, osteoporosis, dentures and all those other natural treasures we worked so long and hard for.
