Stella's Story

Life I'm now divorced after 28 years of marriage and three wonderful children. Life has been better ..but it certainly has been worse. In 2000 my 18yr old daughter Jessica died of complications of rejection after a double lung transplant for cystic fibrosis. She was 9 weeks old when diagnosed and placed on the transplant list when she was 14 years old. After a 2 1/2 yr wait we were told there was no more time to spare...MD's at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston proposed to remove her lungs in entirety and replacing them with potions of lung tissue from living related donors. My younger brother Mark and I were Jessica's donors in a 12 hour operation that gave her a chance to become a cheerleader with the high school basketball team, return as a color guard with the marching band and even attend her senior prom. Fourteen months after transplant and three weeks before her high school graduation Jes died of an overwhelming infection and organ rejection. It's been 13 yrs since the transplant and 12yrs since her death and I can't believe how much my life has changed. I've lived thru the worst part of my life now I'm ready to go on. My oldest daughter Jennifer will soon be34...she is an i...Expand for more
ncredible mother to two beautiful little boys that I adore. Aron will be 14 in July and Andy will be 7 soon. I've come to realize that I have every potential to be a grandmother like the ones I've had...amazing shoes to fill but I'll try. I also have a son Timothy...born shortly after we moved to upstate New York in 1992. He is 19...and has cystic fibrosis as well. After living the life of a CF mom for so many years my son has given me a new perspective to a cruel disease. Tim takes handfuls of medications every day and does inhalation treatments while playing video games...and makes this a part of his life as natural as brushing his teeth. Medicine is such that new treatments are approved every day and I believe in my heart that a cure will come in his lifetime. To that end I am dedicated to keeping him as healthy as possible until that time comes ...along with helping him live his best life. In order to keep my focus on living and validate the significance of my daughter's life I have become an advocate for organ and tissue donation speaking at health fairs at high schools and colleges, workplaces and civic groups. It gives new meaning to 'giving back' for all that was given to me.
