Stephanie's Story
Life
It's hard to summarize the 36 years since graduation in a just a few lines, but here goes: I went to school in Sherman and Denton for five years, finishing with a BA in Latin and an MEd in Secondary Education. I was married and divorced in 1976 to an RHS alumnus. I moved to Oklahoma City in 1976 and began teaching Latin at Heritage Hall in 1977. The following year I married again. We had our first child, a daughter, in 1982. I "retired" from teaching in 1984 to become a stay-at-home mom. The next year we had a son, who turned out to have multiple disabilities that included health issues. In 1986, my husband became a UM minister, and we moved to the first of several rural church appointments. I loved living in those small towns! Our third child, another girl, was born in 1990. I lost my mom to brain cancer in 1997. I was sick for about a year after that with pneumonia and then gall bladder surgery. I've experienced no major health issues since then, and even lost about 50 lbs two years ago.
Our family served God in those little churches until 2004. Now the kids are grown, mostly healthy, and wonderful young people. The youngest lives at home with me, and is counting down the days until she is free(18). Her father and I are no longer together. My teaching job in Edmond gets better every year. I have 156 enthusiastic Latin students who brighten every day of my life. Some other interests I have had along the way, never thinking I would return to the high school classroom:
La Leche League Leader for two years
United Methodist Women member/officer for 18 years
Sunday School teacher for about 25 years, all ages
Vacation Bible School teacher/ director, 20 years at least
Family support advocate since 2000
Active in disability services issues
Served on the State Supt's Advisory Panel for IDEA Part B since 2002
I enjoyed some fun activities before I went back to work, like sewing, reading, and hiking. Now I try to walk our dog, Maximus, every...Expand for more
day. My life has gone from being totally devoted to and organized around taking care of my family, especially my son, to revolving around my work and friends. Of course, I still spend a lot of time trying to get my 16-year-old through this year alive and well, no small accomplishment. With God's grace, it is possible.
Another huge emphasis in my life has been the church. Right now I am attending a congregation affiliated with the Worldwide Church of God. I still have lots of ties to the UM's and the Free Methodists, though.
Other notes: My older daughter just had my first grandchild this past summer. Being a grandma is about the best thing that ever happened to me outside of becoming a mom. God's gifts to me are awesome! It's especially sweet for our family, because this young mom has been insulin dependent since the age of 7. Her management of the disease has been amazing to see. She is my hero.
Another gift is the renewal of a romantic relationship with someone I met while I was a senior(my only year there, actually) at RHS. You'll have to ask me questions if you want to know who it is!
My plans are to stay put for awhile. I moved 7 times from 1987-2002, and I have this thing about moving again: not unless I have to! I love being active in the advocacy community, working to improve the delivery of services to families who have members with disabilities or special needs. It appears I have some expertise in the programs available, whether through schools, medical providers, or federal/state policies. I stay healthy by working out and trying not to ever, ever eat anything with sugar in it.
My favorites:

Movies: Secondhand Lions, Mary Poppins, Indiana Jones
Food: grilled chicken Caesar salad, gyros
Reading subjects: nutrition, parenting, relationships, nuclear physics(did you really believe that one?)
