Stephanie's Story
Forks in the road...
I'm a fairly recent career changer switching from working as a Software Developer at IBM for 20 years to working as a Special Education Math teacher. Let's just say I spent 20+ years pursuing one fork in the road got tired of it and switched to a career I considered back when I was in High School when I did volunteer work at Rockland Children's psychiatric hospital.
I worked at IBM Poughkeepsie and Kingston as a Software Developer developing both applications and system software on VM, AIX, Other UNIXes, Linux. 20 years at IBM was enough for me. I decided I wanted my life back and I resigned September 7, 2001. (Wow my 10 year anniversary is coming up ;-) I did some traveling and finally decided I had enough of programming especially for large companies.

30th reunion so I missed it but I hope to make the 35th reunion. I just completed my fourth year working as a Special Education Mathematics teacher at an Alternative High School for at risk students in Dutchess Counties. I work for DC BOCES at the BETA site. Our students have diagnosed mental illness and/or major behavior problems. Let's just say our students keep us on our toes. I'm not yet as good a teacher as I was a programmer but I'm working on it. You know we really did have a lot of good teachers in Clarkstown School District.
For fun I fly on the trapeze these days. Yes, there are rigs in New Paltz, NY and Kent Connecticut. I've been flying during the summer on Sundays at Club Getaway in Connecticut.
High School was the past. I have good memories of friends, teachers and especially Field Hockey. But I wouldn't do High School again if you paid me. Those were awkward years that I'm glad I left behind 30+ years ago.
