Stephen's Story

Life I am a minister for the Black Creek Church of Christ in Middleburg, FL, and one of her elders. I speak on several lectureships each year on religious topics. I instruct new preachers and serve on the board of directors of the Florida School of Preaching. I love to hike. I have hiked the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, and am presently trying to hike the trail in North Carolina. I have finished the trail in the Smokies in NC. Wow, what a trip! What an absolutely awe-inspiring view of that great rain-forest. I am married with 4 children which we home-schooled. Only one is still at home working on her Masters in Education. What a terrible feeling is this empty-nest syndrome. But my wife, Gay, makes every day all worth the living. Thank God for such a wonderful life and hope for eternity. School I was only able to attend Arvada West the last year of High School. Coming from the Southeastern part of the country (GA, AL, TN), my experiences at Arvada West were astounding. The differences in the resources available were almost unimaginable. Arvada West was like walking into a fantasy world of resources in the classes. I thoroughly enjoyed the Physics classes. I wish I could remember the teacher's name. If we wanted to experiment we could. My best friend was Guy Cox. Sometimes, after school we would go to his dad's Conoco station and I enjoyed watching Guy and his friends work on their "souped up" cars. Sure miss him and Debbie. While there at Arvada West, I was dating my future wife, Gay Allen. I remember well watching differing people head for the new snow in the mountains. Couldn't ski then and can't ski now, but I sure enjoy watching others enjoy themselve...Expand for more
s. Thanks for being a part of my memories. College After I left Arvada West, I went to Bear Valley School of Preaching in Denver (now Bear Valley Bible Institute of Denver). What a tough school. I don't believe I ever got enough sleep; just lived on coffee. I went on and got my BA, MA, and MDiv from Amridge University in Montgomery, AL. I am still going to school working on my PHd. The trips to Israel and Jordan for archaeology have been enlightening. I actually got to preach at Nazareth. What an humbling experience. Gay and I are planning another trip to both Rome and Israel in the not too distant future where I will be studying synagogues of the first century. Some medical problems have slowed down my learning experience, but if God is willing, I will continue. Just completed my Phd in Bible - New Testament. Workplace I love my work as a preacher: counseling, studying, watching the children grow up, watching new Christians grow and prosper in Christ. There is nothing more exciting to me than having a part in molding lives and hearts into the new image of Christ. There are tough parts, too. Funerals are emotionally difficult, even when a person knows that their loved one has gone to a better place. They still have to deal with the empty seat at the table, and the pictures of better times. Weddings are fun, and such a breath of fresh air. I certainly enjoyed performing one particular ceremony for a widow and widower. They were both in their sixties, but were as giddy as teens. I love it. Military Just a brief stint in the Air Force. Not one of my better days. But I surely appreciate the men and women who serve today. May God richly bless and protect them.
