Stephen's Story

Life After graduating from Wood I attended the U. of Michigan for a year. I transferred to Purdue and finished up with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. After college I worked for Union Carbide growing laser crystals in Indianapolis. They moved to San Diego, CA and I went with them. I decided that I needed more education and went to Stanford University where I received an M.S. in Materials Science. I was invited to work at RCA labs in Princeton, NJ; there I met the future Mrs. Bolin. At RCA I grew of single crystals for computer memory applications. In 1971 Linda and I married. We moved to the Boston area where we lived for 11 years. We had three boys, Matthew, Eli and Noah. I worked for 10 years at Raytheon as a laser applications engineer developing techniques for drilling holes in jet engine components and welding microelectronic and computer parts. In 1984 I joined General Dynamics in Pomona, CA. I worked with them for 10 years in a variety of defense related positions. Linda returned to college and got her teaching credentials. In 1994 I was transferred to Tucson, AZ and my family remained in California. I had applied to work at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. After a week in Tucson ...Expand for more
I was called with an offer and I went to work three weeks later. I've been here fourteen years now and it has been fun. High points have been working on the Mars Rovers. Other lifetime highlights; seeing my three sons born and watching them grow. The two oldest are now college grads themselves. The oldest graduated from UC Berkeley and did graduate work at Claremont University and the University of Toronto. He is married so someday I may actually be a grand father. He is now a librarian at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The middle one has a Bachelor's in musical theatre from Northwestern and lives between New York and California. He had a show he wrote the music for that played for two months off Broadway. The show has been recorded and is now available from iTunes. He also has a solo album, of alternative rock songs on iTunes. If you google Eli Bolin you will find numerous links to his work. My baby is now 27 and is working at UPS. The picture I shows me at a recent JPL open house. I found my Mentor, Boris Chaleff, on the internet a couple of years ago and tracked him down. We had a nice telecon. Everyone needs someone as a role model to give them that extra push and Boris was my inspiration.
