Stephen's Story

Steve passed away 6/20/2020 from esophagus cancer. My family moved away from Nashville a few weeks before my senior year at Antioch started. Although I didn't graduate from Antioch, I really considered it "my school". I had a few friends at Bowman High but having gone to Apollo for 2 years prior to my 2 years at Antioch, that is where most of my school friends reside. When I graduated from high school (Bowman High / Wadesboro, NC) I joined the USAF and did about 7 years there. Four years at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska and 3 years at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I married my high school sweety in 1978 and brought her to Alaska with me and we have been together ever since. We had our first child shortly after getting to New Mexico. She is 27 now and gave us our first grandchild a year and a half ago. (how did we ever get so old?). I got out of the USAF to go to school on my GI Bill and Kathy, my wife decided that she would go into the Navy while I was in school. I finished schooll and by then she had decided that she liked the Navy so she made a career of it. She retired about 5 years ago with 20 years. Because we moved a good bit in the Navy, (Florida, Virginia, Texas, North Carolina) I found myself doing all sorts of work. I was a diamond grader and jewelry designer for about 10 years, I was a storyteller for about 5 years. I have been making dental applia...Expand for more
nces (crown and bridge and orthodontics) now for about 11 years and will probably retire from the job I am working now. We had a son in 1989 who was recently engaged and has just joined the Army. My Daughter has been in the Navy for about 7 years now. At this point, I am looking forward to retiring. I figure about 5 more years. Over the years, probably my biggest challenge was leukemia. I was diagnosed stage III in 1999. I underwent chemo for about a year (what a hoot) and have been in remission (knock on wood) ever since. I still visit my oncologist twice a year but so far, my blood work remains as normal as anyone else. My original oncologist was several years ahead of the curve on treatment. She gave me a drug that was, at best, experimental back then which is standard treatment today. Attitude is the biggest part of the fight. I suppose we all are getting to that age now where cancer diagnoses are being visited on more and more of us. Let me tell you from personal experience that statistics don't apply to us as individuals. If you get a diagnosis, keep your spirits up and face it head on and fight. These days, I work, enjoy doing some pretty fine woodworking, ride my motorcycle, and do a fair amount of offshore fishing and take every opportunity to spoil my grandson rotten. If you remember me, drop me a line. Us old geezers enjoy hearing the voices of our glory days.
