Steve's Story
Lest there be any confusion, I am one and the same as the other Brekke listed in our class (Dan). Through accidents of baptism, family nicknaming and school registrations, I was known in school as Steve (my first name -- I'm a "Jr.") and among family and family friends and in my neighborhood as Dan (my middle name).
I'm celebrating, or at least observing, 40 years as a resident of Berkeley (I'm sure many of you know and love Berkeley from television news reports of the past several months). And I just marked the 45th anniversary of my first day in a newsroom (as a copyboy at Chicago Today, if anyone remembers that paper.)
Although I've never wanted to be a member of a club that would have me as a member (thanks, Groucho Marx), I have lots of memories (mostly positive) of our high school years and still identify as a Chicagoan (that's where my mom and dad started out before moving out to Park Forest in the 1950s, and I've got a group of nieces and nephews who are fifth- or sixth generation Chicago natives, depending on how...Expand for more
you count (our first relatives arrived in Chicago in the 1880s, we think, from Norway and Ireland).
The last time I was in contact with people from the Class of '72 was in 2002, when I made some noise about organizing a 30th reunion. That project was interrupted by a couple of mishaps, and I dropped the project. By a coincidence, it's been only 15 years since then in case anyone has thought about having a 45th reunion. (Anyone? Anyone? The Smoot-Hawley Act.)
That's probably enough of the biography for the time being. My work history, if that's an interesting thing, is on LinkedIn (Classmates, in its charming discretion, doesn't want anyone to use a web address on their site because it might lead others astray, or at least away from all the compelling content here).
And I have a personal blog I still occasionally post to. You could find it at infospigot-dot-com if you're curious or need something to put you to sleep late at night.
And I do all that Twitter and Facebook stuff if you come looking for me on the interwebs.
