Stephen's Story

Stephen is originally from Minneapolis (Swedish Hospital to be exact), but now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is married and has three sons. His Swedish is still rudimentary, but his Norwegian, Dutch, Japanese, and especially German are far better. Stephen graduated from Edina-Morningside High School. He later attended California Institute of Technology (Applied Math) and Harvard (business, etc), as well as much later studying Japanese at Cornell. (He likes exotic languages if they are useful.) Stephen works(ed) at The Investment Advisory Group, as a Research Assistant for Prof Clay Christensen at HBS, and for iQ Venture Partners after many years as an international banker with Citibank, Chase Germany, and the Industrial Bank of Japan. Music Stephen likes anything conducted by conductor Edward Elwyn Jones of Harvard Memorial Church, the Ghostlight Chorus of NYC (his second former Whiffenpoof son, Linds, sings with them), and a wide variety of classical and folk music from around the world. Books Stephen likes recently include everything by Jonathan Haidt, Roger Scruton, UK Chief Rabbi & Lord Jonathan Sacks, "Tribe" by Sebastian Junger, The Darwin Economy by Robert H. Frank, and others far too numerous to mention or ...Expand for more
even sometimes to recall. More about Stephen:"Lifelong student and participant in technology ecosystems such as Caltech, Citicorp (then the ultimate incubator), Germany, Japan, and Silicon Valley. Worked in VC and various start-ups before it became absurdly fashionable. I began in high tech, IT and then international banking back when they were mistakenly seen as "pretty boring". Despite my long focus on the future, I also love reading history and listening to "really old" music (especially Elizabethan lute music & much from Haydn to Schubert)." Musically, at least, I was apparently born in the wrong century, though there are many other things to like about the late 20th and early 21st century, like good medicine, sufficient nutrition, jet travel, high speed Internet, and growing international understanding (when not inhibited by too much ignorant PC). I am most proud of my three wonderful and very talented sons, and I realize now how very lucky I was to have had the solid and stimulating family and schools (Edina, especially) I did growing up. The Twin Cities are a great place to start (and to return to), and I have lived in several other wonderful places (and one not so great place for perspective) as an adult as well.
