Stephen's Story
Guess my story is one of being lucky. Spent most of high school studying my brains out. Guess I was trying to prove my father wrong, as he referred to me as "stupid Steve." So I was lucky that I applied myself, because coupled with my grades and the fluke that I could play soccer, got me to Drexel University. Funny, the only reason I attended was to play soccer. Otherwise, I had no clue what I was doing there, except to kick a ball. Tried to keep my grades up to keep my scholarship, even the mandatory ROTC, which is probably my most interesting college story. ROTC officers kept promoting me, and I keep refusing. Remember, this is during Viet Nam. I had a very high draft lottery number, so I should have had no worries, except that my ROTC buddies pulled strings and got me drafted! Different era, my parents simply told me to call after my induction and let them know where I would be. But I flunked the physical due to a recent knee surgery(guess that awful experience was actually lucky),...Expand for more
and played two more years of college soccer. Go figure.
After college started my career in Public Health, while acquiring some local real estate, most of which happened to be in Manayunk(before it was gentrified). Who could have known, just lucky again! In 1976 I met a cute coal cracker nurse(REAL lucky, again). Got married in 1980, with kids arriving in 1981, 1983(New Years Eve), 1986(4th of July) and 1988. As one of the kids later noted, the decade of the 1980's was a rough one for me!
Then spent years as a youth baseball, basketball, and soccer coach, sometimes staying with the same age bracket team for years as each kid moved up. Their high school years found me as a fixture in the stands in far flung gyms and playing fields, as each played multiple sports. Same thing when they went off the college, except the travel got a little longer.
Retired after 36 years in public health, and, nice symmetry, returned to Drexel, where I currently work a day or two a week as a Senior Analyst.
