Stephen's Story

School I guess it all started in 2nd grade at P.S. 73 at 30th & Forest Manor. I attended 73 through 8th grade and met my first love there... I walked Ginger Dalton home from school for the first time in 3rd grade. Oh, by the way, we married in 1967 and although we divorced in 1969 we have a wonderful daughter, Deanna who blessed us with an equally wonderful Grand Daughter, Ashley, now a teen ager in High School. Other friends from #73 that moved on to Arlington High School were Jim Moore, Jim McFarland, Jim Brolin, Rip & Don (Donk) Walters, Tim Williams, Cheryl McCain & Sandy & Trudy McKee. At AHS Jim Moore and I shared a locker for all 4 years and hung out together quite a lot. Jim Brolin and I bowled on a lot of good Junior teams together, especially in the junior travelers. Since our time spent in the military, Jim was in the Army, we have bowled on many teams together and participated in a great many tournaments together. Rip, who was also in the Army, and I shared apartments together for w few years in the '70's and had some great times. As for AHS, I wasn't the most involved person... I was a little shy back then. Best memories would include the Senior Boys Chorus Line in the 1967 talent show. it was crazy! I participated in the Intramural bowling league all 4 years, serving as its President the last two. I am looking forward to the 40th Reunion and seeing old friends including the ones listed above and others including Rick Lyons, Mike Thayer, Bruce Kosavich, John Weishar and many more. Workplace During High School I worked at Miracle Lanes (now gone) as a pin chaser. Later working at Brodey's Lanes (now also gone) and at the RCA warehouse on 30th St. until I joined the Air Force. After the Air Force I returned to RCA for a short time before moving on to Electronic Sales for a while. I traveled Indiana and Kentucky for a Rep Firm until I landed a position at Naval Avionics. I stayed at Naval Avionics, progressing from Electronics Mechanic Helper to Manager of the Incoming Material Evaluation Branch, about 35 people, until taking early retirement in 1995. I then bought and operated one of the Antique Malls at 34th and Shadeland Ave. for a couple of years. I closed that mall in October 1997 and opened a much larger Antique Mall at 62nd and Allisonville Road. This mall featured many ter...Expand for more
rific antique dealers among the 100+ dealers in our 25,000 square foot facility. We had a great 8 year run there being voted the Best In Indy several times before closing the doors in September 2005. I've been mostly enjoying retired life since then. However, I still do some selling on eBay and do some auction buying and selling to stay around the business. This takes me to southern Alabama and Florida on occasion which has led me to consider relocating there in the near future. Military Served in the Air Force from September 1968 through August 1972. After basic training in San Antonio Texas I went to Electronics school on Biloxi Mississippi. Left for my first duty assignment just weeks before hurricane Camille devastated the area. I Spent the next 2 plus years at Griffice AFB in Rome New York, assigned to Air Force Research and Development. Spent much of my time there testing advanced radio and antenna systems. Many of which required flight testing which allowed me to travel much of the world in a Boeing 707 modified for research testing of advanced communication systems and long range antenna systems used by both the Air Force and the Navy. I also bowled quite a bit while there making the Base Team twice that competed in worldwide Logistics Command tournaments. I left there in June 1971 and, after spending a month at home moved on to Osan AB in Osan Korea on July 4th. I finished my active duty there in August 1972. I worked in the radio maintenance shop on equipment so old some of it wasn't even taught 3 years earlier when I was in Tech School. Due to my security clearance I did get to travel a great deal within Korea working on some classified gear. And yes, I continued to bow. We had a 12 lane house on base that still required pin boys to spot the pins by hand - that was a trip. I mad the base team there as well and traveled to Masowa Japan for the 7th Air Force Tournament where I finished 7th just missing the team that moved on to California for the All Air Force Tournament by a mere 7 pins. I seriously considered making a career of the Air Force but decided not to primarily because of my young daughter back in the states. I am proud to have served our country and looking back realize that it helped me grow and opened many doors in my future. Overall it was a very positive experience.
