Stephen's Story

Fifty years is a long time....but at age 35 you thought you'd never get to retirement..and now you wonder where the years went! After a year and a half at UofF, transferred to a small liberal arts college, Lake Forest College, Il, and graduated with a BA in Eng. Lit. Lettered in Baseball 3 years and graduated in Dec. '64. In Aug 65 volunteered for US Army and served 3 years as a Military Intelligence Investigator in plain clothes, including a tour in South Viet Nam from Aug '67-Aug'68. Returning home to NJ, worked for a year as a newspaper reporter before heading out on my BMW motorcycle and touring Canada for over a month meeting people and taking in the scenery. A casual stop to visit an old HS friend(stranahan) on Cape Cod, Ma., turned into a new life long career of residential homebuilding until my early retirement 3 years ago. I have been self employed in the building and real estate business in Ma, NH, Maine, and Florida over the past 35 years. The last 15 years, prior to retiring to SC in 2005, were on the Coast of Maine where I had an office in Northeast Harbor and specialized in new construction, but mostly reconstruction and remodeling of grand old "summer cottages" owned by the very wealthy. My last project was turning a 15,000 square foot brick school building into a state of the art private residence including an addition for a complete squash court with costs exceeding $2 million dollars. In addition to our home on Pawleys Island, SC, we have a vacation home on Hutchinson Island, Fl. that we rent during peak season, and visit twice a year. Major interests now are getting back to golf, and sharing visits to local nursing homes with our Certified Therapy Dog, "Bear", a golden retriever with special empathy for all humans! He can even be "Googled" under" Bear Lullmann "...seems no one can remain hidden anymore! Also attend a few car shows with my restored and customized 66 Ford Mustang GT, most mostly take it out on the weekends to cruise the beach looking for a White Castle, with no luck! We also have a loose group of sportman who enjoy shooting clays at a local sporting and hunting facility known as "The Backwoods Quail Club" and try for an outing at least once a month. Through Classmates have reconnected with a great pal from Grammar School who golfs with me during the winter in SC, and a FLHS friend, Ron Magehy who also attended the same grammar school in NJ and who I ran into my first day as a transfer into FLHS as a junior after 2 years in a naval prep school in NJ. Ron was kind enough to take me for my driving test in Fl., and through our mutual friend, he has also reconnected with some of his frien...Expand for more
ds in our NJ grammar school...small world!. I also connected with an army buddy who served with me in our 30 man special detatchment in VN and shared a few memories of those interesting days. We will be returning to Cape Cod and Maine for a few weeks to connect with my old friend who got me into the building business on the cape, and friends from Maine where we enjoyed our time there. Cold winters and tough fuel costs up north brought us sown south, and we still have the fexibility to travel when we want. Thanks again to Bob Longo who through his contacts arranged for my Puke Green 49 ford to be painted 58 Desoto Plum Purple, install the Lakes Pipes and heat the springs to lower it. That car transported 3 of us in the summer of '59 after graduation to Cape Cod for summer jobs, and we made the entire trip with the Lakes pipes open. We drove 24 hours straight when there were no interstates, and I doubt the 3 of us had more than $40 combined!.After that summer I sold the car in NJ to 4 girls, who paid me in mostly loose change, for $200 so they could go visit their boy friends at Ft. Dix. Their parents were not happy!!! I later heard the car was abandoned on the NJ Turnpike....!!Rest in Peace! My latest sideline is writing for an internet humor site. If you still have a sense of humor you can find me at: thespoof.com under my net name, "Morse" Hopefully will make the reunion and try to remember a few people! Best regards to all. Update: Well, still on the 'right side' of the grass! Life continues to move on albeit at a slower pace down here in the South! We have made several trans atlantic sailings on the Queen Mary with highlights touring England, and thanks to an internet friend from Germany, met several relatives I never knew about, including a couple outside of Bremen with a 'farm' that has been 'in the family' since 1650 with all the outbuildings intact...pretty awesome. Along with that two trips to Norway where my other half who speaks fluent Norwegian reconnected with her relatives that she used to visit in the summer during her very young years. The Mustang is now gone....sold to a young man (40) who bought it for his Father (!) who is my age,and also a VN veteran....glad it went to a good home. After 6 months, and after our trip to Germany, broke down and bought a 2000 Porsche Boxter which is about the next best thing to being on a MC which I came to realize was beyond my diminished physical capacity! Bear is now almost 9, and getting grey like his dad...but still makes his weekly rounds to nursing homes where he is well loved, and reciprocates with hugs and licks...he's and awesome dawg! Cheers.
