Stephen's Story

Dr. Milne received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California at San Diego in June 1976 under the direction of Professor Adriano M. Garsia. Milne's thesis Peano curves and smoothness of functions was a combination of real analysis and combinatorics. After his Ph.D., Milne was a J. Willard Gibbs Instructor in the Mathematics Department at Yale University for the two years 1976 to 1978. He subsequently held faculty positions at Texas A\&M University, University of California at San Diego, University of Kentucky, and has been a professor of mathematics at The Ohio State University since 1990. a full professor since 1985. He held an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship in Mathematics for two years from 1981 to 1983. Milne has given two AMS Invited Hour Addresses: one in 1984 and the other in 2003. Milne was awarded the 2007 Euler Medal by the ICA (The Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications). Milne was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. Notified September 1, 2012. Received January 11, 2013. Milne has a strong record of N.S.F. or N.S.A. Summer grant support, and has published numerous research papers in the areas of algebraic combinatorics, special functions, analytic number theory (including sums of squares), and Lie algebra.
