Stephen's Story

School My biggest crush was Lisa Strahs. In fact, she was my only crush through highschool. Unfortunately, I wasn't mature enough to understand what was going on and so it didn't last long. We became better friends years later. Most inspirational teacher...hmm.. besides Mr. Martindale...it would probably be Mr. Chiachiere. Too bad I didn't master Spanish, but I did remember enough to help me with my current employment. If I could do it all over again, I would have kicked the crap out of everyone that pushed me around. But that would have sent me to the Principal's office and my parents wouldn't have been too thrilled. But, if nothing else, I would have done more work and gotten better grades and maybe followed my dream afterall. It's not like I didn't have connections in high places. How many highschool kids could brag about an uncle ( David Gerber ) that produced television sitcoms, like Police Woman. Now, if I wanted to be a sports photographer, who better to get advice from than my cousin, Madison Square Garden's head photographer, George Kalinsky. But, I couldn't decide what I wanted to do and went into my father's company instead. I wouldn't have met my wife, Jill, had I gone onto higher learning. So, I suppose my choice wasn't that bad. I don't recall any funny or crazy school memories, not because it was so long ago, but because I didn't like highschool. I was glad when it was over. College The only room mate I enjoyed was Bruce Shingleton. We roomed together for 3 years and it was great. Though we had different majors, we liked the same things. Bruce majored in Computer Science and used to write his own programs. I remember telling him once that he was wasting his time with a dead end major like that. That's pretty funny now with the incredible technology that's gone on since then. I remember that Quinnipiac once thought of phasing out that major from its curriculum for small classes and little interest in that field of study. As for the food at our college, it was not desirable to me and others. I dropped 40 lbs in my freshman year. I'd like to be that skinny again. With one of our current accounts, Island Storage of Farmingdale, I've had the pleasure of visiting several local schools including Hofstra, C.W. Post and Stonybrook University to rent out storage crates to students for the summer and partake of a most improved menu for the masses. I was quite impressed with the variety of wholesome food now available, both nutritious and inexpensive. I never had to drag myself to class to turn in a paper although I once waited until 3 days before one was due to sit down and write it. I used to study in the Library as it was impossible to do that in my room. There was way too much partying going on there. For film projects, I did my work in the girls' lounge. They were too busy doing other things to bother me. Sometimes I had an audience but most times, I was alone to do my editing and playbacks. Weekends were boring unless I left campus. I usually did. Yale's campus was only 20 minutes away and I usually went there to see old Black and White films in their theatre. On warm days, I'd climb up Sleeping Giant, the state park across the street from our campus. That was always relaxing and the view was breath taking. I studied Film and majored in Fine Arts. I made several cartoons in college, 2 dramas, 1 comedy and wrote a script for a movie; 40 plus pages of scenes, shooting angles and dialogue. That was the paper I wrote 3 days before it was due. I edited my own work and the work of fellow classmates. One of those fellows did go on to " higher learning ". He busted his tail to get where he is now and I am awed by his past and current work. He has directed a few low budget films and worked for Disney. Lately, he has been Produci...Expand for more
ng films. The new Star Trek film is his. I refer to Jeffrey Chernov. Workplace Basically, I chose my family's business with a guaranteed salary and passed up on my dream job, going to Hollywood and possibly becoming famous, or at the very least, doing what I enjoyed. Instead, I took the easy road and watched all of my friends bust their you know whats to be something I can only fantasize about. Am I sorry? Yes and no. I met a beautiful woman in 1977. We would not have met had I gone on to higher education. I married Jill Finkelstein in 1981. We have a son, Gregory, who's nearly 15 and a gift from God. Diagnosed with A.D.D. in the 3rd grade and put on medication, he quickly adjusted to school and studies and has been in high honors since the 5th grade. He has received 2 awards from President Bush for excellence in academics and we are very proud of him. Currently, I work for E&F Trucking, a premier company in public warehousing. With the current economy, I've made some concessions and done what needed to be done to keep my job. Four day work weeks were the norm for awhile, but things have improved of late. We have 1 location in Farmingdale, Melville, and Edison, New Jersey and our corporate office is in Bethpage, next to Northrup Grumman. We store customer goods, for a nominal fee and deliver those goods on our own or with outside trucking. As far as my old Uniondale days, I wasn't very popular in school. I could count my friends on one hand. I knew a lot of people but only a very few knew me. I was an average student and did just enough to get by. After graduating college, I went out in "the world" to find work in my field. I wasn't able to find anything and I wasn't going back to school for 4 more years of higher learning. The only avenue left for me was the family business. My dad owned a beauty company in Hempstead. I started at the bottom, like all of his other employees. Whatever I wanted, had to be earned. In 13 years, I rose from sweeping floors to Principle Buyer. My brother worked there too until he got an offer to sell Paul Mitchell products. He found a warehouse, in Deer Park, and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Leaving my father was probably the hardest thing I had ever done..... but it was time to move on......I worked for my brother for 7 years. In August of '94, Gregory was born and 6 months later my brother sold his company. I was OUT OF WORK, for the first time in my life. Unemployment found a position for me with a Security Guard service. It was part-time at night. I bounced around with a few companies over the next 10 years until EF Trucking found me. Unbeknownst to me, I had the job even before the interview. As it turned out, an old friend of mine was an even older friend of my new boss. A simple visit / conversation with her and a subsequent phonecall to him was all that was needed to secure my job placement. That along with my UPS and FEDEX computer experience, got me in the door. Within 10 days, I was transferred to Bethpage and began my climb up the ladder. In just over 2 years, I have gone from clerk to Project Manager, with over a half dozen satisfied clients. I can't express the gratitude I feel from working with these people. I've taken individuals from different locations and turned them into managers; people in demand for their talents and hard work. Wherever I go, people recognize me and realize that anything is possible if you work hard enough for it. It boils down to motivation. Thirty years ago, I wasn't motivated. Now I am. Last year, my boss told me I could work there till I decide to retire and that my son has a job waiting for him too, when he turns 16. I look at EF Trucking as a second chance to use the skills I learned from my family's businesses and develop new skills as I move forward.
