Stephen's Story

Life Graduated from the "Brook" in 1965. Worked for a time at the old Madden Ford Dealership out in Bryn Mawr until Uncle Sam called. Entered the USAF in 1966 and got out in 1970. Did a stint in Vietnam from '68 - '69. Upon returning to "the world", I worked for a time at Towne VW and went to Lincoln Tech. I left there and went to work for Pep Boys and have been there ever since. My greatest passion is being a Tai Chi Chuan instructor and having graduated from the International School of Shiatsu. . I had a wonderful Tai Chi instructor, Mr. Chiang Hen-Ping for over 17 years. He passed away in 2002. Now that I am no longer employed at Pep Boys, I can devote my energies to teaching T'ai Chi on a full time basis. I'm on my own now!! In 2006 I opened a fashion and gift shop located in Northeast Philly, off of the Blvd., between Adams and Whitaker Aves. It's called, "Hong Phuoc Fashion, Gift & Wireless". "Hong Phuoc" means "Great Happiness" in Vietnamese. If you're ever in the area please stop by to say hello. I'll treat ya to a bowl of Pho - which is Vietnamese noodle soup...the best!! School Attended Lamberton Elementary, Beeber Jr. High, then Overbrook High. Drove a '53 Merc (Steve Rovin's old car), then got a black '58 Chevy Impala with dragon teeth cut out of sheet metal for a grille. Everyone knew this car! Loved to harmonize in the halls with Paul Musican (rest his soul in peace) and a few of the guys who sung with the Parktowns. Stan Zietz in particular. Where are you Stan?? Great hangin' out daze in Overbrook Park at the Brockton Court Apts., City Line Shopping Center, Bowling Alley, 69th. Street, Ice Skating in Ardmore Rink on Friday nights, Big Boys up on the Blvd., dating a great gal from Northeast High, Barsons, Pagano's Pizza, Richards Drug Store, A & P, Penn Crest Drug Store, Supio's Farm, The quarry behind Rhoad Street, La Rosa's, dating the owner's daughter from there, drag racing down Rhoad Street with my '53 Merc and a friend of mine '57 Ford, Family Drive-In, Larry's Steaks...and on and on. ...Expand for more
Workplace After graduating in Jan. 65, I went to work for Friends Cleaners, then worked at Madden Ford in Bryn Mawr (no longer there). Got drafted in '66. After the service, I worked briefly for Household Finance, then Towne VW, then Pep Boys, Inc. Started at Pep Boys originally in '71, took a couple of years off, then came back in '81 - got a nice lay off in Feb. 2004. Worked all over Philly, managing many stores, was the corporate trainer for a few years, then finally took a position at the store support center in QA (MIS). As of 2/2004, I am no longer at the Pep's. I teach T'ai Chi on a full time basis now. Military Joined the AF in Apr. 66. Discharged in Feb.70. Been to Amarillo AB for Basic Training - then to Charleston AFB (5/66 - 1/67) - Yokota AB, Japan (67) - Clark AB, Philippines (67) - Phu Bai AB, Vietnam (68 - 69) - then Homestead AFB, Florida (69 - 70) A note on Charleston AFB - does anyone out there remember the "pirated" radio station we had? Well, that was me and my roomies that started it all back in '66. Yep, we had a small radio transmitter, you know...the ones that were available as kits from Heathkit, that we hooked up one evening. We were able to access the roof of the barracks and installed a large cable antennae. From there, we strung the line down to our room and hooked it up to the transmitter. We had a turntable, tape recorder...the whole bit. Together, we acted out our favorite DJ's of the time. One guy was "Wolfman Jack" from WLS radio station, Chicago, I was "The Geator with the Heater", Jerry Blavit, from WHAT radio station, Philadelphia, Pa., another was "Cousin Brucie" from WABC, New York. We had a blast playing all the oldies and acting out. The guys at the base loved it. I don't think the "Lifer's" took to this, though, and soon we had to disband the "network". We even had a compliment from the local radio jocks that they heard there was some competition on the Air Base. All in all, good fun and no harm done to anyone. Memories....gone but not forgotten.
