Stephen's Story
Life
I'm living in New Orleans where I'm a visiting assistant professor of anthropology at Tulane University. I moved here in August from Chicago, where I had been living since 2001 with my girlfriend Kristen and our fuzzy cat, Cleo. My position at Tulane is for one year, so I plan to return to Chicago in the summer. My parents live in Bonita Springs and Key West, so I return to Florida often - despite what happened during the last election :)
College
After high school I spent a year at UF, then another five at FAU where I got my BA in 1994. Yes, it took me six years to finish college ... I believe I was distracted by various diversions. In 1995 I went back to FAU to get my MA in ...Expand for more
cultural anthropology, and in 1997 I entered the PhD program in anthropology at the State University of New York at Albany. I received my PhD in December 2003.
Workplace
I'm currently a visiting assistant professor of anthropology at Tulane University. The courses I'm teaching this year include Cultural Anthropology, Religion and Culture, and Race in Brazil. My dissertation research took place in northeastern Brazil, where I lived in 2000-2002, and focused on religious practice in relation to Afro-Brazilian ethnic identity. I'm in the process of publishing my research in journals and I'm preparing a book manuscript based on my dissertation for the University Press of Florida.
