Stephen's Story

Military I entered the Air Force the summer of '80 (right after finishing summer school for a flunked English class). I spent two pretty hot summer months at Lackland AFB, TX and then went to technical school at Keesler AFB, MS to train as a computer operator. I received orders for the 602nd Military Airlift Support Squadron, Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan and after a short leave, left for overseas. Had I been mature enough to handle the time there I believe it would have been fun. But it ended up being a dark, and lonely tour which I'd be glad never to have to repeat. I left Kadena a year and a half later and in June of '82 ended up at AF Global Weather Central (AFGWC), Offutt AFB, NE. Another "stellar" assignment. I met many folks there who I've since lost contact with. I'm hoping to connect with some of them again someday. It's here that I met Vicki, my wife of 19 years. In 1985 we were married and, true to form, the AF, ever being mindful of our happiness, sent me to Korea before we could enjoy our first anniversary. So for one year, I spent a remote tour with the 2078th Communication Squadron, Teagu AB, ROK. Not a bad place, and much easier to endure then the previous overseas tour. Vicki was in the AF and assigned to AFGWC during that period of time so the only option for me was to try to return to Offutt... which I managed to do. Same base, same unit, same job. Blech! Offutt was different then. Tougher with a very unpleasant work environment. Vicki got out after her four was up. I stayed in and managed to move into another job at my unit which made the work more enjoyable. In the middle of '91, the military was going through a reduction in force and I chose to get out, wanting to start a family and be able to stay around to enjoy it. I spent months looking for work and maxing the credit cards to keep us eating. Vicki's...Expand for more
dad found me a job in Lake Havasu, AZ. In '92 we moved to AZ and I started the "big struggle" Much can be learned by living hand to mouth. It was after a few years of this that I joined up with the AF Reserve in Phoenix--the 944th Fighter Wing, Luke AB, AZ. I then spent some years trying to get into the Civil Service. After a move to Glendale, I had success in 1998! I got a 4 year term position Working for the Air National Guard Air Force Reserve Test Center (AATC), Tucson IAP, AZ. Commuting to Luke from Tucson became pretty old and I managed to get assigned to the 305th Rescue Squadron, Davis-Monthan AFB. After two years of civilian work with AATC, my commander and supervisor had my position changed to a military slot. In Oct 2000, I transferred into the Air National Guard and then to AATC where I've been since. More to add... It's 2008, a few years since the last update. I've since retired from the Air Force and am now in Sierra Vista, AZ working for some great folks on Ft. Huachuca. In the last few years I finally got my BS in Computer Science. I managed to pull off a 4.0. Who'd a thunk it? This from the guy who had to take summer school to graduate... My son, Sean, is in his first year of high school here. When going through the line to sign up for classes, etc, he met the JROTC folks and decided that's the life for him. He wants to "shoot the big guns." I told him he'd be better off commanding the guys that shoot the big guns. My daughter, Kristi is plugging away at school as well. Vicki takes her to Tucson once a week for dance class (Irish dance, which she's very good at). Vicki decided it was time to pursue the college degree in the beginning of 08 and has been working on it. Criminal Justice is her focus. That about wraps it for the Arizonians. Now, if I could just get a job in Washington State...
