Stephen's Story

Life I didn't graduate with you, but moved to Tokyo in 1982 (after 8th grade), and didn't keep in touch. When I did come back home, I wondered where everyone went... Graduated from UVA, paid off my loans, and turned around and went to China. I was born in Taiwan and I felt I had some discovering to do on the mainland, where all Confucian culture originated. After several years there, I left a lucrative corporate recruiting biz and came back home to get a master's in counseling. Now I'm in Santa Fe. t the Development Office picking up phones and making conversation. Hmm....once opened up a piece of mail with a check for a cool million, for dear ol' UVA. In China I was in marketing for a 5-star golf course & expat executive housing development on the ocean outside Shanghai. Got to know people from Boeing, GM, etc., and of course Americans weren't the only peeps there: Singaporeans, Aussies, Brits, and plenty of Japanese. I kept these connections when I moved to Hong Kong to become a corporate recruiter. My client list included Oracle China, Freemarkets/Ariba, Coke, and GE. It was such a fulfillment to create my own business with only a phone, desk, PC, and notebook.
