Stephen and Virginia's Story

I was unsure how to approach a conversation on the last five decades, given that my experiences have been intimately intertwined with another former student, Ginny Libring. I settled on an approach that assumes most from the class of 1967 look back with a sense of wonder, melancholy, and perhaps a touch of bewilderment at the paths each has taken, but would write as if about one while actually talking about two. Fifty-five years ago, I left West Covina, save for short visits to see family, never to look back. If I had an inkling of how fair life would treat us, I suspect I would have had less trepidation beginning my first day in my University of Arizona football dorm room. I married Ginny (Libring) at age 19;..........we eloped. It is not an overstatement, with the benefit of perspective and maturity, to state having Ginny in my life was the fortune of my life, as most of the success and joy we shared has been due to her. We have one daughter and two grandchildren. All three are large reservoirs of happiness, filling our lives nearly every day. We intersect in various and beautiful ways, which has allowed us to be more than parents/grandparents, often viewed as best friends – to whom they still listen.. In 1969 we were on the Newlywed Game - yep, the one with Bob Eubanks. We won. Ginny came across so well on camera (go figure) that she was asked to be on another show called the 'Game Game.' She won again! We took our winnings to Arizona where we began married life. Our early adult years were formative and consequential, I suspect the same is true with most reading this. Over the next five-plus decades, I worked three professions, and Ginny a host of jobs as we moved often (25 address changes), leaving her to find purpose at each stop, which she did with an impressive ease that taught me much. Thankfully, Ginny was always up for adventure with a "we can do that" attitude. I was blessed with the ability to play sports - injuries withstanding. Competitive athletics has been a big part of our lives, serving us well with travel, compensation, and personal recognition. After football, racquetball became an obsession, often competing at high levels. The most distinguishing was the late 1970s Olympic Trials, winning Gold and Bronze medals, also comp...Expand for more
eted Intra and inter-nationally. Ginny was also a competitive player, yet she left the obsession part for me. Our interest brought us several years of silent partnership in five athletic clubs in Texas. My first profession was Criminal Justice, 15 years, mainly in Arizona - the first two years were part-time. A profession I enjoyed, receiving national recognition. Next, I worked 26 years in Air Force Medicine, primarily in fixed facility administration, followed by broader issues involving national-level preparedness, international health care capabilities, Operational Medicine, and targeted medical program development. High points were engagement with the White House, work with the US Surgeon General, and International speaking and global issue involvement after 911. Last, I worked 30 years as an adjunct professor, teaching over 250 mostly graduate courses in Criminal Justice, Health Care Administration, Business Administration, and Strategic Thinking. I earned four graduate degrees: three master's: Criminal Justice, Education, and Business Administration, and a Doctorate in Business with a specialization in Health Care. In addition, I wrote/produced two softcover books - used as textbooks (Organization Design and Strategic Management) and one for children that discussed juvenile law. At age 59 I stopped full-time work but continued teaching. My work provided opportunities to travel and live outside the US, so at 59, Ginny and I decided we wanted more traveling which is now our obsession until health decides otherwise. Gin loves to go most anywhere, and I develop travel plans - we have adjusted nicely to this transition. It is not inaccurate to describe us as knowing a great deal about the industry. Four years ago we returned to Tucson to live in a senior community - we have come full circle. This move was not on any life plan. Then friends started moving into such communities and began sharing their experiences. Curiosity got the best of us, one thing led to another, and here we are, and so thankful we did. We hope all ‘67’ students share their experiences; we enjoy reading about the paths others have taken. We also hope there remains a spark for another reunion; we would enjoy the opportunity to reminisce. Cheers, Steve and Ginny Wolfe .
