Steve's Story

Life I consider this to be a living document and reserve the right to fabricate, alter and/or embellish its content at any time including, but not limited to past accomplishments, future goals and/or current levels of satisfaction. How about you ask the questions and I'll try to answer with a straight face. "So, what have you been up to all these years?" Uhhh, hmmmm... not a whole lot. "Where do you live?" I'm currently renting a treehouse- I like being close to nature and there's a great view of the neighbor's pool. "What kind of work do you do?" I consult with folks having trouble in the transitional phase between sabbaticals, leaves of absence and hiatus. "Do you have any hobbies?" I particularly enjoy meeting attractive women and seducing them, though not necessarily in that order. "Are you married?" You're kidding, right? With this face? "Do you have any kids?" The only kid I have is my inner child and he may need a spankin' before this is over. "One more question. Have you ever been married or do you plan to marry someday?" No and yes. I'm hoping to live long enough so that technology will have advanced to the point where I can upload my existence as a software program allowing me to become immortal. I'll hang around in cyberspace eating pizza and watching Married with Children waiting for computers to completely assimilate humanity. Finally, when we're all harnessed as androgynous energy slaves with politically correct moral coding, I'll rebel against the beast-machine and single-handedly conquer the alien mind-control forces behind it. I'll then wander the barren landscape of the post-apocalypse until I chance upon a stunningly beautiful, well proportioned female avatar sunning herself by a reflecting pool. After falling madly in love-at-first-sight, with renewed hope for the future of mankind, we'll be joined in holy end-of-the-world matrimony by a tall, kindly ball of light in a simple ceremony on-the-green. We'll live happily ever after in our very own ultra-modern, split-level Coastal Live Oak raising a family of tree-hugging, bark-eating misfits. This girl has to cook, though- I am so sick of pizza. "Well, that's about all we needed to know and a bit more, thanks. Keep in touch and don't forget the upcoming reunion!" I wouldn't miss it for the world. School OK, how do I do this? I remember winning a prize in the cake walk in Mrs. McGowan's kindergarten at Cresson and fingerpainting and laying on the floor with my towel during nap time! 1st- Mrs. Cawley 2nd- Mrs. Simms 3rd- Mrs. Ellison 4th- Miss Sexton 5th- Miss Boda 6th- Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Leach and Mr. Bender. The Leach grab!!! Squaredancing in the auditorium. Standing in the lunch line with a quarter for lunch and a nickel for milk- then it went up to 30 cents! How about when the MonkeyMobile and the Munster's car came to the school- and the Oscar Meyer Wiener Wagon? Remember painting the map of all 50 states on the big playground and tetherball and the monkey bars and hopscotch and jumprope and kickball and calisthentics with Mr. Kennedy in suit and tie and dress shoes?? Mr. Sturges' paddle with the holes in it for less wind resistance?!!! A couple of us got whacked with that thing just for hopping the fence to chase a kickball!!! I remember ...Expand for more
Sturges had a thing for Miss Sexton and he'd come to our 4th grade class and b.s. about his "helicopter" flirting like crazy. Remember Mr. John, the custodian? How about chorus/choir and the big show we put on at Santa Fe High? I still remember the song, "Fifty Nifty United States" and singing all the states in alphabetical order...and the flutophone? How could anyone at Cresson forget Romeo and Juliet? Rehearsing outside on the grass for days on end. Shelley Lambert, Kim Sudduth, Tom Reynolds, Clifford Mull, Kurt Leavitt, Ricky Rath, Pat Blizzard. Were they all in the play?? I still get alot of mileage out of that one. ;) How about flag football (Rams and Packers) in 5th and 6th grade and track meets and the 50 yard dash and study hall in the bungalow? Manners class with Miss Boda. I had my first crush in 5th/6th grade on Marilyn Meyer while Tom Reynolds was in love with Gaye Allen. What heartbreakers! Even threw back the St. Christopher's medals we gave them. Oh, man Lake Center junior high. Soccer, track, home room in Mrs. Frank's class. Mr. Sardon for Spanish in the "Lab". Annual staff and Music class with ukeleles and typing class. (55 wpm!) Van's tennis shoes and Levi's cords and flowered shirts and Disneyland every year. Walking Pat Galindo home after school while she wore my jacket. Another crush on Debbie Kearns- never even got to know her! Food fights in the cafeteria on a regular basis. Mr. Barksdale asking me "Do you think you're a funny man, Curran, huh, do you??!!" Duh, I guess not. In high school cross-country, baby, was my life. Coach Winder and running greens and Bloomfield and Lakewood and the riverbed and wind sprints. Probably the biggest thrill of high school was getting that varsity letter- no easy task! My buds, Charlie Saucedo, John McDonald, Tony Delgadillo, Jim Mendevil, Rick Hernandez, John Branco. Jeez, there couldn't have been a wilder, crazier group on that campus and we proved it daily in the food court and at the football games and at parties... Riding around in my Camaro or VW, with the 8-track blasting Bad Company, Bowie, Zeppelin, etc. Concerts and getting drunk at a football game and thrown off the track team- what a scandal. Girl's League with Nancy Leyte and prom with Mona Sierra and seeing my car up on blocks in LA with the tires gone after dinner on prom night!! Sadie Hawkins dances and P.E. with Mr. Mitchell who "parted his hair with a razor blade". The epic egg-fight battles on Halloween. Lunch at Lucky Burgers and Tastee Freeze. Smoker's corner. Parties, parties and more parties. Remember the band Ashaw? Hiding in the trunk of my Mercedes and being driven around so I could hear if Kendra Peck liked me. All in all, what a fun trip it was. So much of my memory is tied up in the good times we had at Lake Center and Santa Fe. Can you imagine high school these days??? We are LUCKY! College A couple of semesters at Cal State Fullerton and a half-hearted attempt at college life hardly qualifies as a biography. Who could concentrate on Geograpy or Technological Studies when the beach was calling and I had to pick up my girlfriend from high school!!! Needless to say, my college career was short-lived and uninspired.
