Steve's Story

Life October 2021 update: My original post from 2008 is below for reference. In preparing for the 50 year reunion next year I thought I should give an update on the rare chance someone looks! The years between 2008 and 2017 were pretty much uneventful - work, occasional vacation, grandkids, aging parents. Retirement for Leslie and me arrived in early 2017. When our first (and thought to be only) grandchild arrived in 2010, we expected our son to live in Las Vegas forever. Hoping to retire near the grandchild, we bought a future retirement home near them, only to be surprised when they relocated to Texas so our son could attend seminary to become a Baptist minister. Over the years, though, we developed a circle of friends in Las Vegas as we vacationed there, so stuck with the plan to eventually retire there. Come May 2017 we sold the house in Merced and moved to Henderson NV where we remain till today. The minister son eventually moved to Colorado (Eaton, an hour north of Denver) where he pastors a church. He and his wife Stephanie have 3 children. The days of expecting only the one grandchild are long past. Son number 2 now lives in Tacoma WA, is married and has one child. Most of us in the Class of '72 are retired now so I won't go into how great it is to be in the, uh, "mid-afternoon" of our lives with minimal cares and responsibilities. (I'll save the "twilight of our lives" analogy until we are all in our late 80s!) Signing off here until the next milestone in our lives that warrants a Classmates.com update! Steve 2008: After graduating from college (Chico State, BS Mechanical Engineering) I thought I had left Merced for good. That is, until September 2006 when my wife Leslie and I moved back into town. So what happened in the 30-odd intervening years? Out of college I went to work for PG&E in San Francisco. For the 12 years I worked for them I also lived in Sacramento, Concord and Modesto. Early on in that process I got married and had two boys. Organizational changes at work in 1989 left a choice: move or leave PG&E. I chose to leave PG&E and try something different since we enjoyed living in Modesto. For the next four years I put my Professional Engineers license to use as an engineering consultant. It taught me that any successful business must have three things- someone who can go out and get business (marketing), someone who can take care of office issues (administration) and someone who actually like...Expand for more
s to do the work (technical). I was only good at one of those (technical) and being only a one-man operation left me lacking in the other two areas. After 4-plus years trying to drum up business and not planning well for taxes, vacation and retirement I decided to go back to coporate life. In 1994 I took a job with Southwest Gas in Las Vegas. While there I went through a divorce then transferred to the Southwest Gas office in Victorville. Three years in Victorville ended when I had the opportunity to hire back on with PG&E and move north. By that time I was seeing my old high school sweetheart, Leslie Williams. The move for the new job resulted in the marriage we both had expected would happen 25 years earlier. For the past 6 years I've worked with PG&E and expect to be with them until retirement, 10, 11 or maybe 12 years from now. I recently changed positions with them and am headquartered in Merced. Prior to that I was headquartered in Modesto while living in Stockton. Leslie worked for Contra Costa County out of Martinez in the Bay Area, so Stockton was a nice halfway point. But she too changed jobs in 2006, taking an accounting-type position with Merced County. I should mention my two boys. The oldest, Kendal, still lives in Las Vegas. After graduating from UNLV he worked as a realtor. He did good with that until the recent real estate slowdown and is now starting to look for something where he might utilize his Business Management degree. In 2006 he married a wonderful girl his mom and I had been hoping he would hook up with from the time we moved to Vegas. Leslie and I get to Vegas several times a year to visit them. No grandchildren yet, for those that might be interested. Kyle is two years younger than Kendal. He graduated from UNR in Reno. Currently he is living in New York City, working to get by while he debates what to really do with his life. Whatever he decides I hope it includes moving back west since one trip a year to NYC is about all I can handle. Leslie and I continue to share a mutual love of music having sung in our church choir in Stockton and by attending musical productions whenever possible. She doesn't quite share my love of motorcycle sportbike riding but she does indulge my enjoyment of it. Maybe life could be better but I don't really know how. We both consider ourselves quite blessed. I hope the same is true for my Merced High classmates regardless of when you might have graduated.
