Steve's Story

Hi all: After I graduated from Montgomery, I headed to UC Davis to study to become a Veterinarian. Sadly, however, my heart was not into studying too much, and after I joined a fraternity (Phi Delta Theta) my grades started to drop very quickly. As I was going through a period of soul searching, a couple of things happened to me that are still an integral part of my life: 1) I changed my major to Physics 2) I met my future wife Lisa Bonetti and 3) I started training in Okinawan Shorin-Ryu karate. Since I completely changed my major, I needed to re-take almost all classes that I had already taken as a zoology major. That, coupled with my fraternity days placed me on a 6 year plan. I ended up making up classes during summer school one year (about the time I started karate) and finally graduated with a degree in Physics in 1985 from UC. Davis. Before graduation, I had a summer internship working at Varian Associates in Palo Alto working on helix traveling wave tubes (basically a fancy name for microwave amplifiers). Upon graduation, I moved to San Carlos and started work full time at Varian in June of 1985, after returning from a three week honeymoon in Tahiti with my new wife Lisa. Lisa was raised in Healdsburg, and went to school with Mr. Blankenship's daughter (remember, the other chemistry teacher at Montgomery?). Lisa and I will celebrate our 23rd year anniversary this May. Within 1 year, I was transferred to the thin film sputtering division at Varian, and after that, the Varian image tube division (we made night vision goggles for helicopter pilots to see at night-really neat stuff). Also around that time, both my wife and I were accepted at graduate school at Stanford. She graduated with an MS in engineering business; I received my MS in Applied Physics in 1990. In 1992 my son Spencer was born, and in 1995 my daughter Tatiana was born. The entire family enjoys hiking, soccer, karate, scuba and spring board diving. W...Expand for more
e also have a beagle named Stella that is a very important part of our family as well. In 1994 I left Varian and started working at Intel Corporation in Santa Clara. Lisa and I also moved to Sunnyvale, which is where we still live. At this point, I decided that I would go back to being called Brad at Intel, like I did in elementary and junior high school (Jill Lawrence, Pam Butler and Janice Swan always did have trouble calling me Steve! If I make the event this summer, you can call me either-or worse!). Intel has treated me well, and I've had jobs ranging from developing CMOS sensors for camera chips, working on advanced flash memory cells, thermal analysis of notebooks, show casing live computer demos with our executives on stage and now, working on graphics power and performance architecture on notebooks. I know that this sounds remarkably geeky, but it is pretty neat stuff. In particular, I really enjoy the people at Intel. The company has an interesting cross section of people from many different cultures and with many unique skill sets. During the years I have tried to keep up with my piano playing, and I'm happy to say that both my son and daughter are also able to play the piano. I've already mentioned starting karate when I started college, and I have a class of kids that I teach. This last September I was awarded my 4th degree black belt, but I can seriously say the biggest challenge I've faced is getting my daughter to pay attention in my karate class! I hope I'll be able to make the BBQ, but I'm not 100% sure. One of the great perks about Intel is that every seven years the employees are given a sabbatical and are able to take between 8-10 weeks off. Mine is this summer, and I am not sure how close I'll be when the party hits. For everyone that has not written down something about themselves, I promise to turn Carol N. loose on you if you do not do so!! Trust me: you DON'T want that! :) Best, Steve (Brad) Gospe
