Steve's Story
After graduating I became active in supporting the West Seattle area coalition against the Samoan gang activity by organizing street/park evening rumbles (fighting with hands only-no weapons as there were too many serious injuries and deaths) This worked for awhile but after a few months of negotiating I learned that the Samoan community loved to play football. We soon started holding games at Lincoln Park in West Seattle. Our differences shallowed and soon we were getting along as friends and friction diminished between the families. During this time Chris Smith, Kenny Catone, By Bro Scott Helland, Steve Machias, Todd Zufelt, Scotty Desmond,...Pretty much anyone I could muster to attend these games was there. One day when playing ball up there we were visited by a Seahawks talent scout and along with myself two others from the Samoan community in Seattle were invited to the Kirkland training facility for the Seattle Seahawks! Wow!!
After all this I attended Renton Vocational-Technical school for a year and followed in my fathers' footsteps as a metals tradesman focusing in welding and blueprint reading. Later I attended Fort Stillicoom College, Big bend comm. College, South Seattle comm College, UW and Cougarville. At first I was intereted in studying the origin...Expand for more
s of the universe so my major was physics and sub major was Engineering.
After just a few quarters at UW I was invited to visit MIT. I became involved in sub atomic particle research for a short time in Boston and helped out at Fermilab. The advanced calculus math was tremendously taxing on my time. This research as far as I was concerened was and still is before its time. We cannot even solve Pie yet.
After changing my major to engineering I finished with a degree in civil engineering. I did not apply any of my school or training from education to earning income. Right after graduating I settled down and married a nice young gal from Maple valley. I remained in the welding trades all these years. At first it helped pay for college and sustenace during school, then soon after Marriage we had 2 baby boys.
While raising the boys and working the metal trades I became very good at what I do. The boys are all raised up, they stay close. I combined my experience and my education to secure several different positions as Welding Engineer.
After getting bored with welding engineering I became interested in piping. I am now a Union Pipefitter but they have me in the engineering
department. I am happy, have 3 great hobbies and am enjoying life.
