Steve's Story

If your memory is not as good as it used to be, let me fill you in on whats been happening for the last nearly 50 years. I had gone to school with a good portion of you since the second grade. In June of 1971, l was fininshing my freshman year at Ralston and we packed every thing up and was off to Louisville, Kentucky. We knew in March that the move was coming. I had just won my first letter in swimming and then found out I'd be swimming for a team in Kentucky. So, having established in Louisville, I tried to make new friends and by the end of Summer, I had re establish my swimming carrer. My father was an exec with the IRS and to move up, you move. We were in Louisville for a grand total of 11 months! Our next stop was Nashville, Tn. Franklin Tennessee to be exact. So, my third high school in 3 years. Change swimteams again, make new friends. At least I got my Senior year at Franklin High, so glad not to move again! I got a couple of offers to swim for some small colleges, but I wanted to become an Engineer, so I gave up swimming and headed for the University of Memphis (then Memphis State) to get my degree in Civil Engineering. I finally got my BSCE in May of 1979, and moved again to take a job with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. I set up shop in Little Rock and been here ever since, My carreer with A...Expand for more
HTD started in construction, but after 7 years of "combat", playing in traffic, a car just missed me at the intersection of I-40 and I-30. I then decided to move into the main headquarters and use my pencil and CAD. I eventually became a senior designer and retired in 2012 after 33 1/3 years. Along the way I also got my Proffessional Engineering License.in 1984. Another thing I picked up a long the way was a beautiful lady from South Texas to be my bride. Meribeth and I have been married since 1989. No children, but we've raised a lot of cats over the years! She is the reason for my success and happiness. Ive also become an expert hike leader for the Sierra Club and Ozark Society. There arent many Ozark or Ouachita mountain valleys Ive not been in. I also lead adventure Backpacking trips to places out west like Grand Canyon, Tetons, Zion and Big Bend. But Arkansas also has some fantastic streams, so Ive become a pretty decent canoer and rafter. I retired in 2012 after 33 1/3 years with the department. I then began leading more trips, visiting state high point and traveling with Meribeth to far flung places around the world. My high point count is 44 states, It's hard to tell a life time of stuff in just a few sentances, but Im happy where things have gone and where they're headed!
