Steve's Story

I've mostly made my way through life working with words: I've been a salesman, a children's and young-adult librarian in a small Maine library, curator of science fiction in a university library, novelist and short story writer, a sometimes lecturer and teacher. I'm best known as a science fiction and fantasy writer -- the Liaden Universe novels written with my wife and co-author Sharon Lee are in print in a Russian, Polish, German, and English -- and I was one of the earliest proponents and publishers of electronic books. Sharon and I travel to and are frequently guests or Guests of Honor at science fiction conventions in the US and Canada; we've sold several millions words of fiction and are still writing. Since we're freelancers I tend not to consider retirement. I've also been a newspaper reporter, editor, and owner, and I've written print, TV, and radio ad copy. Along the way I spent time working with computers, managed a computer store, was Internet Librarian fo...Expand for more
r a dotcom, and was for several years sysadmin and chief trainer for the Maine Meeting Place and the Citizen Access Network, which supplied computers and connectivity to the disabled across Maine, with a focus on rural areas. Twenty years and a couple months after I graduated from Franklin we moved to a rural area of central Maine where our freelancer's income goes a long way; we have a house near the international snowmobile trail and fairly regularly see deer, moose, eagles, wild turkeys and raccoons; not as often we see coyotes or black bears, and the coyotes we hear at night, as well. Books due out soon include Saltation in hard back and Fledgling in mass market, as well as Mouse and Dragon, and Ghost Ship -- another science fiction novel in our Liaden series. In 2010 we'll be Guests of Honor at Oasis 23, a science fiction convention in Orlando, Florida for Memorial day and three weeks later we'll be Guests of Honor at DucKon, a convention in Naperville, IL.
