Steve's Story
Life
I finally left Richmond in 1972 after having seen the best of the 60’s come and go. I moved to Washington state (Spokane and then Vancouver) where I lived for 30 years. I started at UC Berkeley right out of high school, just in time for the Cuban Missile Crisis, but. I didn’t stay long there. After various detours, I finally got an BA/MS in Psychology and started out professionally in 1976
I worked in public education for 24 years. Thirteen of those years were as a school psychologist and various other positions in special education. During that time, I travelled each summer, often in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking places and became fluent in Spanish. I ended up getting a BA in Spanish and spent 11 years as a high school Spanish teacher.
In the summer of 2002, I retired and moved to Thailand. I'm now living in Chiang Rai in the far northern part of Thailand, near the borders of Burma and Laos. It's one of the most beautiful parts of Thailand...Expand for more

I remarried 17 years ago, a year after moving here. I'm now a fluent speaker of Thai as my wife does not speak English. I have a son here (stepson technically). He is now 22 years old and is starting his senior year of university. He is a great young man. I feel very lucky to get to be his father.
I have been retired for most of the almost 18 years that I have been here (as of June 2020). I came out of retirement for four years to work at an International school in town, where I taught middle school science and math. I was principal of the school for the last year and a half. I retired permanently five years ago.
I still cycle and walk a lot – my dog keeps me honest about not missing any of the walking – and do a lot of garden work, so I stay fit. I’ve always had hobbies, so I’ve never been bored. My life has been blessed, if not always easy.
