Steve's Story

Life Here it is the for those interested: Hung around Covina till I went in the Army in "72" Went to Germany and drove heavy equipment then did OJT to run printing equipment. Married my first wife( Sue Simons) in Dec. "72". Came back to Covina to a printing vocation in "74". Bought a condo in Azusa in "77" and divorced in January of "79". Married my current wife in Februrary of "79". Still printing at The Tribune and the City of Baldwin Park. Sold the condo and bought a new home in Fontana Ca.In "80" I started my own printing business in Fontana and relocated it to Big Bear lake in "83". Couldn't seem to sell the Fontana home to move to Big Bear so I sold the printing business there.Had our first son in March of "83". Moved to Orange and rented out the fontana home. Worked for various printing companies trying to get a fair wage till "86". Went into the plumbing vocation and soon with a friend learned the trade as well as construction crafts. Finally went to work with another company (plumbing)in"88" and the bucks started rolling in! Yea!! By then we had had enough of the big city and bought a home in rural Utah. After a year of going up to work on the Utah place, we finally moved there in "90" sold the Fontana home and had a big pocket of money. Started my own plumbing/Handyman business. Did pretty good. Started a baseballcard/ collectables business with my Dad and the wife ran it. Dad passed away in "95" and by then there were 2 more boys in the kids section. Did some drag racing (still have the car) and the wife had breast cancer that same year. Treated and all gone!! Sold the card shop in late "97". We had bought a second home for income( a real sweet deal!) and my mother moved into it. She fell Ill and moved to be near my sister in Reno and we made plans to also eventually relocate there. That move never panned out and we moved into the second home for a while and rented out our intown home for a year. I drove a truck for a while out of Reno and became a construction foreman for a onetime customer and ran my plumbing business at the same time. The little town wouldn't grow and the cold winters started to get us down a bit and we started to look for a warmer area and a closer K-mart! We had to travel to Tucson to visit an ill cousin and found Cochise county. Tombstone and Sierra Vista looked real inviting. I searched the net for a job with a municipality with good pay and benifits. It was July 2001 and I had filed job apps with Cochise County as a facilities Maintenence Tech and Sierra Vista as a public works road worker. The interviews were a day apart. I didn't really want to be in the sun all the time and didn't go to the city interview. The wife and I had a great time as a mini vacation and I showed her some of the neat stuff I had found on a recon trip the prior June. We both loved the area. I felt real good about my county interview and was offered a position. We have now been there almost 5 years and really love my job. My wife took employment also with the county about a year or so later. We have a nice manufactured home on an acre in a rural area north about 15 miles from downtown Sierra Vista and 19 miles west of historic Tombstone, Arizona. We do get a little snow in winter and the summer brings the monsoon rains but boy does it smell nice after the rain! Somehow during all this, I managed to develop my music interest and spent from January 1978 till about September 1986 playing in Christian rock bands around Southern California. I was bassist and lead singer of 4 different bands during this time and had a blast.I also still have a close friend that is the drummer of the sixties band the "Electric Prunes" that reunited in 2001 and tour on a limited schedule. hat's the guys! It's been a pretty good life so far and other than my wife's illness and loosing my Mom this last May, things are still looking good for a nice future!! Cheers to all Steve Update Jan 2009: In late "05" my wife's cancer came back in her bones. The wife is still fighting Cancer But is doing as good as can be expected! Going on 8 years at the County and busy with side work. The drummer from the Prunes moved here a year ago and we formed the "Steve Phelps Band". We have a new CD called "Lifes Highway", we started playing out live in August of "08". We do our originals and a mix of sixties and seventies covers. Can't seem to forget the old days!! When I get time I have been doing some drag racing at the local track in Tucson too. The wife and I will celebrate our 30th wedding annivarsary in February of "09". Oh and I promise to show up at the next reunion. Really, I PROMISE!! Later fellow Colts! Steve P.S. Have a granddaughter now as my oldest boy married in"07" My other boys are still home and the middle son will graduate this coming May. The youngest is about 6'3" and man can he eat!! C-Ya Steve UPDATE: July 2011 Sadly, March 22, 2010 I lost my wife Susan R. Phelps (Rapier) after the returned cancer. She fought a valiant battle and she is very much missed in every way. Then, in a very unexpected turn of events my ex-wife Sue Simons, CHS 1972, passed away also. I attended the funeral Dec. 28th in Covina ,California. It was a bitter sweet reunion with her family and I saw many friends from my past. It all seemed so long ago but was also in someways like yesterday. I thank the Simons clan for making me feel so welcome after so many years. All there were just GREAT!! Next time , just for fun!! I still work for Cochise County and still love my job just as much. Now though, I am looking to retirement at 64 in 6 years. My oldest boy divorced and has remarried this last year and is staying at my home in Arizona. My 2 younger boys are trying to decide what they want to do with their lives and the middle boy signed up for college using a PEL grant. The youngest often stays at a local friends place and starts a new job this coming week. I have a new music CD in the works and I recently got the engine done and back into my race car. Hope to see some track time with it real soon. So single life is my M.O.for now and I enjoy my work buddies and some close friends. Do a bit of side work and putter around the Chez. Will be going to see family in Reno and enjoy the action at Hot August Nights. It's so cool to see the sixties bands I never got see back in the day as quite a few of them play during the event. Guess that's it for now. Cheers Steve Up date as of August 2012: Still in Huachuca City, Az. still working for Cocchise County and still single.I have met a nice lady here named Karen and things are progressing very well with us. It is very different though having been married for so long and really didn't know how to date after all these years ! we are both widowed and do have many things in common like a love for cars and Hot rods.Still needing to push my boys along toward their own lives but things are moving along pretty good. Still go to Reno every year for Hot august nights where I see a big bunch of my family that live there. This year was extra special as I got to finally see Steppenwolf live and had a front row seats. will post some pics soon on my facebook page of the trip. This trip is always a blast and never fails to be the highlight of my year!! am trying to see if I can make the Sept. reunion I saw that Jim Gardner was planning to go so I will try to make it to see him.
