Steve's Story

Life Most of my personal postings and online relationships with classmates and friends have moved to Facebook. There you will find a more robust profile, Southport High School Class of 1967 and Clearwater High School Class of 1967 groups, etc. The Classmates environment still has some good year book focused collections and is useful for posting class reunion information, etc. Other social networking websites seem to be stronger in many other areas. Jan and I retired in May 2013 and move to our previous rental cabin in the Laurel Valley community of Townsend, Tennessee. Laurel Valley is located next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) in the foothills to the GSMNP. We are very active in the commnity. After learning that our retirenment mountain home communities did not have a strong computer science k-12 education program, I decide to become actively involved in computer science advocacy. I enjoying being a champion of Computer Science Teacher Association (CSTA) project at Code.org in the area K-12 schools. I married [for the second (and last) time] Janice (Jan) Werner Kemp in March 1994. Jan was a senior attorney with the Travelers Insurance companies (house counsel) for west central Florida. We know most of the attorney and computer science/IT/professor jokes. After 24 years on the faculty/staff of the University of South Florida (USF), I left USF in 1996 for full time consulting. I was a computer/web consultant and trainer for a variety of organizations. I am also pushing 1to1/ubiquitous computing, BYOD, & individualized learning empowerment programs in the K-12 school systems. My community contributions included leadership of the American Civil Liberty Union (ACLU) of Florida surving on the Board of Directors as Vice President, Secretary and Investment Chairperson from about 1989 to 2013. My oldest daughter graduated from the University of Florida, College of Engineering with a degree in computer and information science and engineering (following my interests) in 2002. The oldest daughter is married, has a boy and girl and works for Deloitte & Touche LLP where she is a senior manager in Washington DC. My stepdaughter graduated from Princeton University with a major in molecular biology (more of my interests) in 2002, is married and has a boy and is Director of Policy for Cypress Creek Renewables in Ithica NY. My youngest daughter graduated from San Diego State University in their hospitality management program, is marrried and has a son and is working for the Marriott Corp. Jan and I enjoy hiking (most of our vacations are half wilderness hiking), biking, web exploration and empowerment, community involvement, travel (several trips to Europe and natural/native areas of the US) and nature. School I was born and raised in Indianapolis, mostly on the South side within several blocks of either side of South Port High School. (My father liked to build houses. So he built his first home at 1398 Maynard Dr. in HomeCroft and 5 years later he built a home at 1102 Southwood Drive.) I attend the Perry Township school system from K-10 grade. My family moved during the summer before my Junior year at Southport HS (June 1965) to Tuscaloosa Alabama for one year then to Clearwater Florida (June 1966) for my Senior year of high school. I graduated with my class in June 1967 from Clearwater High School (CHS). I did not know many people at Clearwater High School, because I had not grown up with them. So, I try to attend both Clearwater High School (CHS) and Southport High School (SHS) reunions every five to ten years. I had not dated before I move away from Indianapolis because I was too young and too shy. However, I always had fantasy crushes on some of the neighborhood girls including Reba Stevens, Susan Martleg, Holly Himmington, etc. My friends in Indianapolis included Stephen Malcom, Larry & Lee Lammert, Dan Fisher, etc. Clearwater High School (CHS), Clearwater, Florida: My family moved to Clearwater in the summer of 1966. My brother Richard (two years younger) entered CHS as a Junior (Richard had been accelerated one year in school) & I entered as a senior. We did not know anyone. Richard & I took the college preparation courses including the more difficult mathematics and science courses. I joined the National Forensic League (NFL) at CHS and participated in debate and public speaking. Richard joined the CHS swimming team. I dated Trula O'Haire and Margaret Redd. The debate team and NFL were the focus of my work and relationships. Through the NFL I got to know Bobbie Thompson, Jim Walker, Gray Mason, Richard Konrad, David Chafin, Trula O'Haire, Rick Goodgame, Kevin Betourne, Dudly Katz, John Marquardt and several others. I did not have a car. I had to borrow dad or mom's car for any dating. So I had lots of male chemicals in my body and a great frustration in fe...Expand for more
male relationships. My year at CHS was not that happy, but I did grow. I attended only a few football and basketball games. I still don't spend much time watching sports. I do like to participate in sports and still run, ski, bike, hike, etc. My favorite courses were debate, chemistry and psychology. I enjoyed school but suffered from the physical and psychological effects of having had polio in my right arm in approximately 1953, when I was approximately 4 years old. I got polio during one of the great polio epidemics, before the introduction of the polio vaccine in approximately 1956. The polio made me weaker in my upper body that most of the other boys, which prevented me from participating in many sports. The polio also reduce my self-esteme, which took me until I had enough success as an adult (work & relationships) to get over. I enjoyed most of the academic subjects including mathematics and science. College I started college at St. Petersburg Junior College Clearwater Campus in the fall of 1967 on a scholarship because my family was going through financial difficulties and I did not have that great of a scholarship. I did well enough at SPJC to be admitted to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. I was also in Circle K and a member of the SPJC Clearwater Campus student government. I started in pre-engineering with mathematics and science courses then changed to business and accounting. I graduated from SPJC in the spring of 1969 with an A.A. I started at the University of South Florida Tampa Campus in the fall of 1969 with a major in accounting and electives and almost minors in mathematics and computer science including operations research. I was starting to build a reputation as a computer wiz. I kept my Circle K membership going and also I joined the TKE fraternity. I graduated from USF in August 1971 from the College of Business Administration with a major in Accounting and informal minors in mathematics and computer science. Immediately after graduating from USF, I left on tour of Europe with former college roommate Randy Reder. We had a round trip airline ticket on Icelandic Airlines with an open-ended one year return. We had no reservations and no definite plans of travel. We got off the airplane in Luxemburg and decided to hitch hike to Paris instead of Amsterdam because too many other kids were going to Amsterdam. Randy and I continued to travel together for about a month then we separated in Madrid Spain and I continued to travel for another two and a half months (total approximately four months) and Reder returned home several weeks later. I ended up visiting over seventeen countries from Spain to Turkey, Italy to the Netherlands. I stayed approximately a week in Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, Madrid, Athens, Istanbul, Venus (in that order) with several days spent in Munich, Belgrade, Luxemburg City, (in that order) etc. This was the grand tour on less than $700. I have returned to Europe over five other times for several weeks at a time and each time spent much more money and much less time. Workplace I spent approximately 25 years on the faculty/staff at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Most of my work was in computer technologies, databases, analysis (SAS Institute software - Classmates does not allow you to use website references), teaching computer courses in a professional development environment, assisting on a number of research and proformance grants, consulting for USF to various corporations and school systems that provided USF with grants to do work, etc. So, USF got me into the consulting business. I took time off from USF to do consulting during several periods before leaving. I left full time work at USF in 1996 and then reduced my professional development teaching in 2000. I also attempted to follow some passions including my interest in K-12 1to1/unbiquitous computing, BYOD and Code.org initiatives. In my retirement I continue to work to empower students with computer technologies that would provide quality simulations of all the important skills they will need to have as contributing members of our society. My passion is "mathematics, science and technology" but I would love to help improve the rigor and relevance of all the content & skills areas of schools with computer based technologies. Teachers could once again focus upon the "whole child" including the family. Military My draft number was 262, so I was never called. I probably would not have been able to server because of my polio weakened right arm. I became a quite anti-war believer at about the time that CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite turned against the Vietnam war. I have generally been against most military actions since that time except those to oppose genocide. I generally believe that American military diplomacy and arms sales have increased the problems in the world.
