Steve's Story

My Reunion Notes and Comments to the RHS Class of 1970 A Thank You to the Reunion Organizers I don’t know about you, but I thoroughly enjoyed every part about “Reunion Night”. John Abbott and Jamie Daniel did a nice job as the MCs of recognizing all of the team members and asking them to stand and/or make some comments. RHS Class of 1970 Reunion Committee: Marilyn Mays, Sherry Drewitz Jones, Kathy Poole, Anita Pagdilao Ogden, Cindy Hardy Munz, Toni Jacobs, Terri Reed Conklin, Diana Testa, Faith Carter, Katie Poole, Maryann Garcia-Kelly, Steve Rojas, Dennis Soto, Kevin Mowll, and Sam Trad. The Reception Desk ran smoothly and it was easy to find names tags. Thanks Diana Testa and Faith Carter. The Party Schedule/ er, “the Program” was nicely designed and gave us the plan for the night’s festivities. Note: A big screen tv ran a video montage, courtesy of Keith Johnson and Kevin Mowll, depicting about a gazillion photos from 1970 – many contained within your 1970 Makio and on the Facebook page. Probably several other classmates also contributed some photos as well. Thanks to Keith and Kevin. I kind of expected a somewhat typical “rubber chicken” dinner and was pleasantly surprised to have the tri-tip and the scrumptious salads and fresh fruit. I thought dinner was great – so thanks to Steve Rojas for nailing down the Redlands Country Club as a venue for dinner. He (Steve Rojas) generously mentioned to me that “the ladies” - basically ran the show and he was somewhat along for the ride. I imagine “the 4 amigos ” contributed more than noted. John Abbott provided lots of comic relief while he and Jamie Daniel recounted various comments from and histories of classmates, comments about the HS tour, and comments about the committee contributions of the late David Dangermond. Thanks John & Jamie. Thanks to Sherry Jones, Felice Hubbard, Sam and many others for posting all your photos to the Facebook page. Comments about my Video # 1 – Keeping Up with Sam So – before I shot these little videos, I had already greeted Sam and several other people in and around our table. But, I didn’t know that Sam was playing the role of official (or semi-official) “Reunion Night Videographer”. At the start of the video, Carolyn Riddell sees that I have my cell phone up, while I’m starting to shoot a video of Sam – the “Videographer”. She probably thinks a joker/lunatic is on the loose – she may be right. 😊 Initially, it clearly looks like “serious” Sam is a bit surprised that someone (anyone – joker – or - lunatic ) is actually following him around. (An aside: Sam shot a lot of the video posted up on the Reunion Facebook page and has also contributed lots of other photos over the years. I thought it might be nice to show “Sam at work” – doing nice stuff for all of us; that documents and memorializes the Class of 1970.) As the video rolls along, Sam, smiles and waves at me and then asks “Am I bothering you?” And then says - “I’ll stop if you want. There’s more people that like this, who are at home and couldn’t come.” I jokingly responded by saying “I’m sorry, what’s you name again?” Sam smiled, took a few steps and said - something that I can’t quite make out – perhaps you can determine what he said. To me, it sounds like he said “You’re just kidding me” OR “I said for [the 10th time, I don’t work around jokers or lunatics].” I then finished by saying “I think I know who you are”. He replied “Sure”. Comments about my Video # 2 – Quizzing Sam Trad “the Promoter” while he was taking still photos . The comments on this video all came out pretty clear. Thanks Sam for just being a great sport. My Comments to the Reunion Attendees To you - the “Survivors”: Bey...Expand for more
ond the lost year of 2020 due to that Covid thing, somehow you/we weathered that health storm (so far) and also - all the many ways one can become part of the memorialized group of classmates. I imagine we all have at least one person on that list that was a good friend during our days at RHS. So, as Captain Obvious might say, “You are all just very tuff, resilient people who apparently paid enough attention to avoid circumstances that will lead to your demise.” And, you have thrived. All of us have found some level (our own individual level) of success in life. It appeared to this observer that everyone was smiling and enjoying the recognition and re-acquaintance with friends and classmates. And why wouldn’t you? Whether you think about it this way or not - all of us were silently proclaiming (rightfully), our own success by just showing up with 51 years of adult life in the rear view mirror. Some classmates could not make it in person, but of course you are “Survivors” too. Perhaps we’ll see you all at the next party. It was good to see and speak with several of you “guys & dolls” during the evening. Some of you have very good genes! And I said so to several of you. 😉 Thanks you all for attending, I sincerely hope to see you all at the 55th or the 60th. What I Missed: I missed seeing a hand full of old friends in person. Jim Geissinger (AKA Jimmy Gunslinger – the Champion & MVP Bee Team quarterback “slinging them touchdowns”). We played a lot of baseball together starting at Cope Jr. High, in American Legion baseball and at RHS. I drove down 9 hours to Redlands on Friday before the Reunion and elected not to go to the Tartan. Jim was there holding court (per photos), but I missed that chance to reconnect. Maybe next time Jimmy. I think many of us missed seeing both Ricardo Brown and Ennis Dixson in person. Ricardo, as I’ve learned, stays active and in touch on Facebook, so – through his many comments and observations, it’s nice to be able to connect with him. Ricardo, I/we hope you get past your medical issues soon and will look forward to seeing you in person next time. Ennis has a summer place in/around Homer Alaska (our buddy Adrian told me) – so he probably likes to ride the AK summer as long as it goes – even into October. Maybe at the next Reunion Ennis??? I think many of us missed seeing Charlie Roberts (AKA Johnny Horizon) and he posted on the Reunion Facebook page that a medical issue kept him away. Be well friend - and we hope to see you at the next rendezvous. I missed Gerry Bauerle. The “Gerr/Jerr Bear” loved playing football intensely and was a Yell Leader with Richard Green and Don Petite in our Senior year. He got into lots of other stuff and was a really funny guy. I emailed him a few times in 2020 and I think I convinced him to actually attend the Reunion (vs being a “maybe”). Alas, my last email went unanswered. Then, I learned that he had passed away suddenly in 2020 – but not from Covid. Dennis Soto. Dude, you’re a Reunion Committee member – what where you thinking??? A lot of people were looking for you. Captain Obvious suggests that your presence will be expected at the 55th or the 60th. And I know you won’t want to disappoint Captain Obvious. Having good friends as we age is like having gold – human gold. Please do make the effort to stay in touch with fiends and family. The “Science” is clear – you’ll live longer. Also, did everyone notice that Charlie Osbun is in about a hundred of the photos taken on Friday and Saturday nights? Way to go Charlie!
