Steve's Story

After graduating in '68 I went with Dave Nash to KC where we met Ethyl Merman and wrote comedy. I wrote a short story about it (The Graduates). Next fall I went to New Paltz (SUNY) and roomed with Joe McEleavy (GNS '68) (still editing the story titled "The Effect of the Psychedelic Revolution on the Individual in Society". When Nixon got elected I burned my draft card at an SDS rally and quit school. Underground resisting draft in LA and rooming w/Nash selling door to door. Wrote a play about it (Choir Boy Gowns) which was produced at CW Post in '71. Rode the bus to Ft. Hamilton with Bobby Bakst (GNS'68) and passed my physical. Continued resisting with pro bono council of Leon Quat and the Friends Meeting in Manhasset. Enrolled at Post and studied acting. I wrote a story about it (Crazylegs and Cosmic Steve). Beat draft with lucky number 212. They called up to 195 and next cut would have been 215. Graduated and went to work for my father selling housewares. Got married and divorsed in '76. No kids. No story. Continued writing comedy with Nash (Tut Tut Tut a tragic/comedy in league with Springtime for Hitler as most offensive play ever written. It is the Exodus story from the Egyptian point of view...as yet unproduced.) Developed appreciation for literature and tennis....Expand for more
Bought biz from my father in '82. Got married to Melanie in '85 and had Molly in '86 and Heidi in '90. Got involved in environmental movement and politics. Wrote a story about it (Campaign for the Environment). My family has been my greatest achievement. Molly graduated from U of Miami biz. She works with me and has energized our biz. Heidi is a Senior at NYU majoring in social entrepreneurism. She will go to Shanghai after graduating in May, for a few months. My wife, Melanie is a yoga instructor and massage therapist. We both enjoy reading, health and fitness, dance and theater. I have developed a passion for writing and joined the LI Writers's Guild. I have written about 75 stories mostly "frictionalized memwars". If you are reading this, might recognize the characters and events, even though they have been disguiesed for the usual reasons. Still playing tennis, swimming, music, and feeling great, but bummed out with the state of the world. I am disappointed in our generation. WE seem too self-satisfied and resigned to accept a deeply flawed world. And I do not agree with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielburg about our parents generation being the greatest. We can do better. If you would like to read any of my short stories, they are still free. I like sharing them.
