Steve's Story
With the encouragement of Sister Regina Cordis I applied to Saint Louis University to study geology. I spent 4 wonderful years there, falling in love with the Midwest and the great people I met who lived there. Never regretted leaving Jersey and venturing out to the broader world. After college I went to Indiana University to pursue a Masters degree in Geology, which I received in 1976. During that time I got married to a college sweetheart, and divorced 5 years later. Then I met another lovely Kansas City lady and got married again. My masters was the key to the oil industry and we moved to Houston, where I worked for Gulf Oil. 7 years later my one and only child came along, followed by the crash of '86, when oil dropped to $10/bbl. After a period of unemployment, I trained as an insurance adjuster and worked in that field for 8 years. Had a chance to get back in the "oil bidness" in '97 and took it. Have been back for 20 years now, with only 4 layoffs this time. ce fiction, music, rambling, rockhounding, massage, and more and I have never felt so at peace with a partner. Through all this time I've played guitar and sung folk songs, and I'm still doing it. Never gave up mineral collecting, and now have a very nice 3000 specimen collection. After many years photographing with film I have switched over completely to digital images and take lots of photos on trips and of minerals, with posts on FB and Flickr.com. You can find me there easily and see what I've been up to. Now that we are both retired, I am running a small mineral sales business doing shows in the Houston area and we are both writing and performing songs using our guitars for accompaniment. We travel when we can, mostly to visit family. I will go back to NJ one last time this spring to see my last family member before he leaves the state permanently for Vermont. NJ was a great place to grow up in the 1950s and 60s, but I wouldn't want to live there now. We are very active in our local mineral club, Houston Gem and Mineral Society, where I am Show Dealer chairman, School Collections chairman and Mineral Section chairman. I also have an account on mindat.org, the mineral place to be.
