Steve's Story

Well folks, I made it too 50+ and so far I think it sucks. Compared to the alternative though I will live with it. Everything has gone pretty well over the years as I have been married 30 and have 2 great daughters. We have lived on the Carolina coast since I got I out of the Marine Corps. I like too call it Hurricane Alley. We had a bullseye on the front door for 6 of those suckers in three years. Let me tell ya'll what, all kinds of stuff flies in 130 mile an hour wind. I rode everyone of them out in our house. No where to go. My wife retired last year after 30 years as a school teacher and I plan on slowing down from my remodeling business. We have been pretty wide open the last few years raising the girls, soccer, cheerleading, and I coached high school football for 10 years. We had a lot of fun. Darlene and I enjoy following the Sox, so we have done some traveling over the years and would also like too spend more time in Maine, summers and early fall that is. I am not shoveling anything when I am gray er, especially snow. We would like to visit Ireland and I would like to go back too Scotland. I spend my time collecting old cars and reworking them , my latest was a 48 Oldsmobile coupe but I just brought home a 1965 Chevy Impala. I drove it on the trailer, a real rarity for me. I also have a 53 Ford, a 56 Olds and 2 48 Pontiacs. Got to have something to pass the time with. My boxer keeps me in exercise as she loves to go for a walk/run, I am still not sure who is walking whom. She is absolutly the finest dog I have ever had. I have 2 cats, Ruby and Cloe, or I should say they have a servant, me. They were stray kittens 6 years ago and now they have it made, must be the Leo in me. My best memories over the last 30 plus years have been my family and all the folks who have touched my life. I have been a very fortunate man. Looking back at the days at MDI, I was really lucky too go too such a fantastic place. I was very fortunate to have some really great people look after me and make sure I made it from point A to point B. Pat Burns, Draper Liscomb, Mr Parady, Mrs. Pyle. Rob Marshall, Ivan Braun, Dennis Damon and the lovable Fritz Carter, too name a few...Expand for more
. I also had a great group of friends to fall back on when things got tough. Jon Berry, Ian Cameron, and Everett Gilley were always there. Playing football and being involved with other sports kept me in school. Being around successful people made me believe I could do anything I wanted. The guys I played football with are the reason I never give up. We bled together, laughed together, busted our butts together and in the end we were winners together. A bond for life forged thru hard work and respect for each other. Dickey Allen, Harry, Scotty, Jeff, Eddie, Dougie Hodgden, Billy Modeen, Peter St. Germain, Skip, and Dave Turner. We brought the school together as one. The Bucksport game was the highlight of my high school career. The goal line stand was a moment in time. Playing football for the Marine Corps was fun but not the same as your hometown. I always wondered how a kid from Maine would stack up against all the guys from the rest of the country. I was fortunate and named All Marine as a middle linebacker in 1976. I played with some unreal talent. I still miss and love the Island like no other place in my heart. I enjoy my visits more and take the time to enjoy the Park. A true gift from the lord above. I will always remember the runs to the top of Bubble Mt with Howie Richards and the rest of the track team and trying to push the rock over. I wonder how many people have tried the same over the years? Mr Richards was a really special person The native folks have had to put up with a lot of change since I left. It is hard to believe that over 35 years have passed since I was just a kid from Maine. The Island has changed more in the last 30 years then in previous 100. I guess it is what it is. I know that the next stage of this journey in life will not be as easy as the last 50 years, but I also know that there are folks who haven't been as lucky as I have. A friend once said "a complete day is one in which you laugh a little, you cry, and you think". If one does this every day, it makes for a pretty complete day. I wish all who visit this space a little peace and happiness. Always wear a smile, it really messes with people. Always, Steve
