Steve's Story

Right after high school, I started having children with my first wife. We had two boys, the oldest Chris and the youngest, Adam. My first wife moved away while the kids were still little and I raised the boys by myself. I remarried a few years ago. My new wife brought a daughter to our marriage. I am the only father she has known and she calls me Dad. Our daughter is 24 years old now. My oldest son turned 38 years old a couple of months ago.. He works hard and has good morals and values. He married his high school sweetheart They have been together for 23 years. They have two boys, my grandsons, Kasey and Kolby. On April 21, 2003, my younger son Adam was a junior in high school. He had a brand new driver's license and spent his spring break fixing up an old VW that he worked off by helping his grandfather out. He was stopped on a rural road, waiting for on-coming traffic to clear so he could turn left. While Adam was waiting, a drunk driver struck his car from behind. Adam's car was pushed about 85' and ended up in the on-coming lane. a vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction struck Adam's car. A...Expand for more
dam was killed instantly. Since Adam's death, I have spoken out against drunk driving. I have told my story at several large and small groups of people. I also lobbied for tougher drunk driving laws. The person who was responsible for my son's death had a long history of DUI and other alcohol related incidents. As a result of a lot of hard work by several people in addition to my lobbying, we were able to pass California Assembly Bill AB3045. AB3045 is a law that enhances the Ignition Interlock device requirements for habitual drunk drivers. The law is named after my son, "Adam's Law." When I lost my son, an indescribable piece of me went with him. The work I have done to combat drunk driving and my wife, daughter and my oldest son have been my inspiration to carry on I have worked in law enforcement for the past 27 years. I retireed as a sergeant from the Stockton Police Department in April, 2019. . My wife and I spend our summers traveiling in our RV. We have a few toys that we take with us in the toy hauler. We stay home and take care of the house during the winter months. Best wishes to all, Steve
